Wanting to load a few 357Magnum here and have never done so before. Most of my sources (Hodgdon, Lyman) say they require a magnum small pistol primer, although Lee just says small pistol primer. I have plenty of SPP, but no magnum primers and am not likely to find any in the near future. Can I use SPP's in the 357Magnum loads and expect close to normal firing?

I suggest a test. I have, and couldn't measure a difference in accuracy or velocity between CCI SPM and S&B SPP in .357Mag with H110, 158gr bullets.

I suspect in colder weather or somewhat reduced loads, it might have mattered, but it didn't in my testing.

I have CFEPistol,4227, H110, Win231,...and trail boss.

and loading with some pulled 158 grain bullets with a copper base/exposed lead nose in semi-wadcutter shape.

that’s one of the dilemmas; I’m just using up some extra materials so this is a one-time load I likely won’t repeat. Too few to test effectively.

231 should be good, not going to give max velocity but if you're not looking for that perfect load it'll be easy

I like Blue Dot, doesn't need a magnum primer for heavy loads. hdbiker
