Spp vs. Smpp
Can you replace small magnum pistol primers safely for small pistol primers. I have a few thousand magnum primers and needing to load some 38 super and some .40 s&w rounds. Thank you in advance.

The general rule, which I have read on THR nearly 1,000 times, back off 10% and go for it.

That said, SPPs are available all over the place. If you want to pay the “new normal.”

You really need to work up your load again if changing types of primers. I even drop a couple points and work up when changing brands of the same type. You may find it is no different but it could ruin your day if things go wrong when you skipped a step. My results can be VASTLY different from yours. Play it safe please!
Case in point, I have a matched set of Ruger 45 Colt revolvers with sequential serial numbers. They will both shoot common ammo fairly well but loads developed for each one will not be at all accurate in the other.

Actually, magnum primers are dependent upon which powders you're loading. If you are using a slow ball powder I would use a magnum primer. The .38 Super and 40 S&W don't really need a magnum powder unless you are using a slow ball powder. Even .357 Magnum ammo doesn't necessarily need a magnum.primer if using a powder like Power Pistol or 2400.
