I'm looking to add another M1911 to my arsenal, in my price range I have a choice between a Taurus M1911 with all the trimmings (railed frame, skeletonized, adjustable sights etc.) or a Springfield Mil-Spec. I already have a Mil-Spec but I used it as the basis for a project and it is now unrecognizable (turned it into a MEU SOC .45 using the same procedures the marines use). So which gun is better for the money, I worry that the Taurus must have a pretty bad build quality to be that inexpensive with that many toys on it, and I trust Springfield. I'd really appreciate your advice and any thoughts on Taurus 1911's (I have already shot the Springfield, of course).

Well, I don't own either but as far as the Taurus 1911 goes, A lot of people are happy with it on the Taurus forum. Complaints are minimal if anything. I know there is a thread here on THR about someone doing a test with them at a range.

He lets other people shoot it and such. Just do a quick search for it. His jammed with certain ammo but once he used different ammo it seemed to be fine.

Hope that might help you any. Check the Taurus forum if you want about the 1911.

i own a few SA 1911's, and their quality, as well as cust serv, is fantastic.

i would never even entertain a passing whim of purchasing anything taurus.

Just for information purposes, how many Taurus firearms have you owned, as you seem to have knowledge regarding their quality, wondering what you base the above statement on, experience or hersay.

I've got a Taurus PT1911 45acp and love it! It's been "Floating My Boat" forever... Over time I've light sanded it, then painted it, then stripped it with acetone, painted it a different color again, then last but not least acetoned it again and left it that "worn"" look. I've even let water sit on it for hours to see what would happen...no corrosion or rust.. Try doing that with a "Top Brand" 1911... Still runs like a champ and never jammed once... Besides the fact that I bought it used for $375, it's one of the best choices I've ever made..

Philippines or Brazil?

Springfield or Taurus?

It's actually Brazil or Brazil? ;)

At this point, I think it's a matter of how much you want the goodies. If the rail and other goodies are needs rather than wants, then the Taurus would be the pick. Others PREFER the absence of these features, which leads them to a basic Springfield.

My father has three Taurus semi-autos (Millennium 9mm, 24/7 in .45, and TCP 380). The 9mm has issues with light strikes, but the others are 100%. We plan to send it back when we get a moment. We each also own a Rossi revolver and they are 100%The thing about Taurus is they're hit or miss, not necessarily all of sub-par fit and finish. The two reliable ones are completely fine. I think the issue is with consistently, at least then it comes to Brazil-finished guns. The USA-finished TCP is a really great shooter from my experience and all accounts I've encountered; it does seem the final location makes a difference with the US being more favorable

I say the Mil Spec. I've never liked Taurus, and the few I've shot gave me issues more than not. Plus, you already have a Mil Spec, so you know the quality and you know the company. If it were me though I wouldn't limit my options to those two pistols. I'm not sure exactly what you want out of the pistol, but there are several other guns in the price range of the two you listed, with some really nice features too.

Taurus bashing aside, from all reportd, the taurus 1911 works just fine. Get whichever you'd prefer. I prefer SA over Taurus personally.

I have owned two Taurus that both had problems. Some people get great Taurus others have problems.( neither was a 1911) That withstanding the problems with the Taurus 1911 is they take special grips and the sights grooves have to be cut if you want to replace the sights with aftermarket. Personally for the money I don't want anything made in brazil. I'd buy used and get a colt or something. Both companies have great customer service. The last taurus I sent in was back in one week.

I have both...no issues with my Illinois finished NM prefix Mil-Spec from Springfield...my buddy's N prefix Brasil (Brazil) marked Mil-Spec works just as fine...my new Taurus PT1911AL light weight frame is running great thus far...

The Taurus was about $100 plus less than the Mil-Spec...if you like the Mil-Spec (G I 1911 looks with a few extras (higher/better sights, flared ejection port, throated stainless one piece barrel) get it...if you want yours with the up swept beaver tail, ambi safety, nicer sights yet (currently Novak's but Taurus/Novak sight dovetails), some frame checkering...get the Taurus (plus the added option of an aluminum frame...where you gonna get THAT for $450??? :D)

Good Luck with your choice...

Bill

I have a milspec that I am happy with, only have about 50 rounds down the tube, but fit and finish is great.

I have a Mil-Spec and my father has a PT1911. For all the extras that you get, the Taurus is a good value for the money. Since you already modified a Mil-Spec before. Do you want another with the a beavertail etc? I went with the Mil-Spec because of the plain looks (don't care for front slide serrations) and better sights over the GI. Both are good for the price, but I think Springfield will hold their value better over the years.
