Help please...

I inherited an 03-A3 from my dad who put a sporter stock on it but did nothing with the sights. I hate the peep sight and would like to get rid of it and put a scope on it.

What's the normal removal method of the rear sight? I removed a small set screw on the right side and that didn't seem to help matters. I couldn't find another screw to the bridge top. The sight seems to have a dovetail, but I'm not sure. I lightly tapped on it with a rubber headed hammer but couldn't see that that helped move anything. I'm stumped on the correct removal method.

Also, what scope mount base is recommended for a low mounted scope.

The sight looks like this one... http://www.gunauction.com/search/displayitem.cfm?itemnum=9315026

Thanks

Drive it off left to right with a brass punch and hammer.

The sight base is also deeply staked to the receiver under the sight so you have to get past that too.

Depending on the maker and vintage of your rifle, you may or may not be able to get the old sight off without destroying it.

Remington's are heavily staked, Smith-Corona not so much.

I added a link (above) to what looks like mine. I think this was Remington, however it was retooled by National Ordinance and re-stamped. I have had a gunsmith check it over for headspace and such. He said it all checks out fine and should be a good shooter. He also thinks it has a new barrel and new bolt. Both look great.

I found this but it didn't work. I felt no release and the rear sight blades didn't move. Must not be the same sight.

Instructions

1. Lift up on the bolt to release the bolt from the locked position and pull the bolt back to open the breach. Remove all of the bullets in the breach before you proceed with removing the rear sight from the frame of the gun. For your safety, leave the breach open as you work.
2. Locate the round knob on the right side of the rear sight. Turn the knob counterclockwise to loosen the locking clamp. The rear sight blades will move all the way forward, and the knob will get harder to turn as the locking clamps start to loosen.
3. Push the rear sight forward until the clamps are disconnected from the frame of the rifle. Pull up on the rear sight to remove it from the frame.

Looking at the base from the sides, it looks like there are prongs that fix it in place. I'm afraid to beat on the side with the way those prongs look.

It's not a Remington. The National Ordnance is an aftermarket receiver with military surplus parts assembled into a rifle. Their quality was not particularly high, but if your smith knows his stuff and checked it thoroughly, it should safe to shoot. Any value will be as a shooter or a source of parts for restoring another rifle.

I've heard that, however the top of the receiver looks like the Remington name was ground off and re-stamped with "National Ordinance".

Is there a serial number data base that can be checked?

Any of them from any name brand company.

But you cannot simply low mount a scope on a 03A3 without bending the bolt handle for low scope clearance without hitting it.

And installing a low scope safety that can work under the scope without hitting it.

There is much more to it then just drilling some holes and slapping a scope mount on it.
