I have an old Springfield model 120A .22 rifle that over the years has had the threads buggered up and ultimately stripped out completely. A friend of mine said he could helicoil it and it would be fine, which was just the beginning of my head ache. First he broke the tap off in the barrel, then he snapped off the helicoil. He got that dug out and decided to drill the hole out a bit bigger, tap new threads and use a larger bolt. This all worked just fine except that when he tapped the new hole he had the tap leaning to one side and now when you mount the barrel in the stock it's rolled off to the side.
My question is, how badly am I screwed on my old .22? Can the hole be carefully welded back shut and redrilled and tapped? I hate to drill it out the next size bigger and try to retap that size, but maybe thats my only option?
Is JB Weld an option of any kind? I know the old rifle isn't worth much but there's a lot of sentimental value involved and I'd really like to save it if I can.
