Is there any markings on a Springfield Armory (the new company) that would denote wether or not it is stainless or not? I recently received a GI model from gunbroker. It's painted and I was thinking it was carbon but now I'm thinking its stainless. Is there any way to tell the difference?

No special markings... (that I recall)

Why are you thinking stainless if I may ask? IIRC SAI's GI WW# in stainless had somewhat polished flats, frosty rounds and all parts SS.

You got any SS bits and pieces inside frame or slide? Have you detail stripped it and checked inside the firing pin channel?

Painted? Not phosphate (Parkerized)?

How was is listed on GB? SS cost a bit more than their park'd versions (IIRC) as well.

You could call Springfield with serial number. They'll let you know.

Either find a small place with paint already missing or scrape some off where it won't show like inside the frame and put some cold blue on it. If it's carbon steel the cold blue will instantly darken it. Or call SA and ask them.

I'll call springfield tomorrow. The seller stated that he had painted it. There's tons of small nicks exposing bright metal below. I bought it thinking I would re parkerize it but I don't think someone would paint a gun black if it already is black. I can't see sandblasting the whole frame then painting it. Also the hammer and bushing seem to be stainless. No cold blue on hand to test.

In other news... The plunger tube appears to be held on with JB weld :/
