I have a question: a friend of mine told me that the magazines from a Springfield 1911 will not fit a Colt 1911. Is this true? That wouldn't make sense to me. I thought the parts would be interchangable.

I have two Springfield 1911s (one WW2 milspec and one Custom Shop beast) and a Colt Series 80. I've used all my magazines in all three without incident.

You should privately laugh at and make fun of your friend. He knows not of what he speaks

The answer could be a little more complicated ...

Magazines should exchange between the two makes of pistols, but if one had a particularly tight magazine well, or if a grip screw was a bit long, some binding could occur and cause someone to think there was a problem. With today's general lack of inspection and quality control almost anything might happen. However a competent pistolsmith could quickly fix any defect, and after that the various makes of magzines would interchange.
