Springfield Armory 1911 9mm, Good Idea?

My dealer has a Springfield Armory 1911 9mm, stainless with target sights. The feed ramp is integral with the barrel, the trigger is nice. There's a full-length recoil spring guide rod, easily disposed of (I like to be able to finger-pinch to check the chamber in a 1911). My question is this: is it silly to buy a 1911 in 9mm? I have a couple in 45ACP, and this would be a fun gun understudy if I bought it. It looks strong and well-made, should shoot forever and a day with cheap, low-recoil 9mm ammo. I wouldn't intend to carry it, just enjoy it at the range. Anyone have any thoughts on whether this would be a valid purchase? Anyone own one? Thanks

I've got the Springfield 9mm with the Fixed Novak Sights. I've had some problems with it: The extractor needed tuning, the sights seemed to be off, and the trigger was pretty heavy at first. Those seem to be the usual issues with 1911's though.

So in response to what you said, I think you did pretty much everything but give the final answer to your question.

I've had two of those go through my hands, and both of my customers loved them. I even had a chance to shoot one of them, and while not incredibly exciting, it was still a pleasure to shoot.
I would rather get something like a SIG 226 in 9mm myself, before I would get a 1911 variant, but my customers both are 1911-type gun collecting nuts who feel they need ALL of the variants out there.

I have shot both the smaller size and the standard size. They are well built, very nice guns. Look like they'll last forever.

For inexpensive practice -- or if for some reason you love the 1911 platform for a defense gun but prefer a 9mm bullet -- it's a good purchase.

Great gun..got one in a trade..had to do some work to it..but it was a great gun..lots of fun to shoot..no problems at all..

yes..do get a 9x23 barrel fitted..now you got a great carry gun..

Springfield in 9mm

This would be a great gun for IDPA or plate shooting. Make sure to pick up a few mags for it , and to answer the question about capacity, they hold nine rounds. I have a S/A Custom Shop in .38 Super, that is one of my favorite single stack 1911's.
I wold reccomend getting a barrel in this caliber rather than in 9x23, but I'm a big fan of the .38 Super, having a total of five of them in this caliber. You would have to reload for the .38 Super to bring out the best for it. JoeyT

Springfield 9mm 1911

Best out of the box 1911 I ever had. Guess I got lucky as I had to do absolutely nothing to it to enhance reliabilty or accuracy. Did a trigger job and replaced fixed Novaks with an adjustable from MMC, eveything else is as it came from Springfield.

I gave up on 9mm 1911's.

I had a Colt 70 series, a Kimber Stainless Target II, and a Dan Wesson Pointman Major, all in 9mm, and all of them had reliability issues.

On the other hand my (former) SIG P226ST 9mm and Beretta 92 Steel I 9mm are heavy enough to make 9mm recoil practically non-existant, accurate, have good triggers (the Beretta is single-action), and are/were 100% stone-cold reliable. (I sold the P226ST to buy the Kimber) :banghead:

SA 1911 in 9mm

Purchased one in the fall and it shot reliably with WWB and many diffrent reloads. The snows came before I had a chance to really shoot is enough but the only minus so far is what appears to be mediocre accuracy ca. 1" @ 10 yds. My PA 18-9 will do a half inch group at that range. Awaiting spring to give it some more use.

Back when I was meddling with IPSC stuff, I traded into a Colt 1911 in 9mm. That was fun! So little recoil that you could just really stack them in one small group, no matter how fast you shot!

I somewhere traded into a Commander top end in 9mm. 20 years ago, probably. Anyhow, I just got it built up on an after-market frame by Virgil Tripp, and it shoots okay. I haven't really shot it enough to get everything "just right", nor messed any with its innards, but I can tell it's gonna be another "fun gun".

9x23 Bah!! Go with the .400 Corbon. You just need a barrel.


As for 9mm, I don't know. It seems wrong somehow. Like cross dressing. If you just want to plink why not .22? Otherwise if recoil is a problem use lightened loads in .45ACP.

Anyway this is why I kept one Browning High Power. The only other calibers I want for 1911's are one of those .22 kits, and the .400 Barrel.

I use a 9mm Colt Combat Commander as a training pistol, and it's been 100% so far. I've got about 2000 rounds thru it without a single misfeed, jam, or hiccup of any kind. I'm so pleased with it that I'm fixin' to add a couple more 1911-pattern pistols in 9mm to the safe as soon as I can find 'em.

I'm *really* looking for an alloy-frame Commander in 9mm, but so far I've not found one.

I had a 1955 vintage Lightweight Commander in .38 Super.

I bought a 9mm barrel, recoil spring and magazines and it ran like a champ with them.

I have a springfield fullsize 9mm that I love, and even carry for defense on occasion. Never hiccups at the range, and a 100% reliable for the street. I use the mecgar stainless and colt stainless mags for carry, and the blued ones for the range. For some reason the blued mags dont lock the slide back on the last round.

One day after I graduate I want a Yost titanium 9mm commander. Perfect balance of weight and power for carry(for me that is), plus it would be really cool

A shooting buddy bought one last year & really likes it. I've had the pleasure of shooting it a couple of times and like it...I'm glad he as one so I can shoot it every now & then w/o having to buy one of my own
