a friend of mine went to stay at his grandfathers ranch in california and well....he came home with a springfield armory garand. the rifle is in very good shape his grandfather was the commanding officer of mcas cherry point here in new bern nc and as a marine knew how to care for the rifle.

my question is since its not an original is he safe using new ammo or should he use the surplus/milspec?

i told him till he finds out keep to managed recoil rounds and milspec but its hard to find around here

He should use only surplus or milspec ammo in a Garand.Ammo with the wrong pressure curve can and will bend the operating rod.If you wish to shoot civilian commercial ammo in a Garand,a Schuster or McCann gas plug should be installed. These allow the user to regulate the amount of gas going to the oprod, and work very well.

Boca Wayne is right. DO NOT use commercial-eg.- Rem., Federal, etc. - ammo in that Garand! The op rod can be damaged! Use surplus military ammo only. It can be ordered thru the mail at CMP.com, and the Greek surplus they have is good stuff. Take good care of that old war horse by feeding it the right ammunition. Buckshot Bill

No new ammo in M1's?

Really, I haven't heard that before?....and after obtaining my Garand, I of course immediately sighted it in with Federal....now you've got me worrying I've damaged it.

Is this one of those internet opinion things we shouldn't listen to or does someone have a link where the CMP says it as well?

You can find information every where on the internet stating NOT to use commercial ammo in an M1 garand. I've been told by some that commercial 30-06 ammo at 150 grains is okay, but I'm not sure about that. Plus, military surplus is still readily available and cheaper. Hornandy just came out with a special 30-06 round that was designed with low pressure specifically for the garand. It's nearly $40 for a box of 20.

Go here:
http://www.odcmp.com
Follow the directions and get some M2 Ball ammunition shipped to your door.

Federal American Eagle FMJ ammo is OK in a Garand.
Winchester Power Soft point 150 grain is OK in a Garand.
Winchester Supreme 168 grain MATCH hollowpoint is OK in a Garand.
I have Yugoslavian, Danish, and Greek surplus and they are all OK to shoot in a Garand.

All is a LOT more expensive than what the Civilian Marksmanship Program will sell you .30/06 Mil-Surplus for.

Sneaky Pete here: A BIG 10-4 on the Schuster adjustable Gas plug. NOT only can you use it to compensate for Heavy Bullets and/or Sloooow powder--BUT you can also use it to reduce your group size. My group size came down from 4>5" off the bench @ 100yds. 5 shot groups to 1-1/4>1-1/2" 5 shot groups. Something to do with barrel harmmonics??? THANX--SNEAKY
