I just had a chance to shoot my friend's Springfield Armory Loaded M1A Rifle, with a black fiberglass stock and a stainless steel barrel. All I can say this is the most accurate non-match rifle I think I have ever shot.

I'm not a particularly good rifle shot, but I put 3 of my first 5 shots in the X ring. That was at 100 yards from a sitting position using surplus 7.62 NATO 1980's vintage ammo. I had my most accurate .30 cal rifle with me, a Remington 700 BBL Varmint Special in .308 with a heavy barrel. Even though that is my rifle, I could not equal the groups I got with my friend's M1A. The gong at 200 yards I could hit 2 out of 3 times.

The M1A was not a cheap rifle - I know my friend paid at least $1,700 for his. But, I was very impressed by it. We experienced no malfunctions with it whatsoever. Also, he dropped the gun on his scope transporting it to the range. He was afraid the gun had lost its zero or worst, but it was fine.

Anyone want to donate $1,700 to me? :neener:

The M1A is the real deal, its a tool that will do the job without worry, however its a bit heavier to haul around compared with any AR platform, and the ammo is heavier by a longshot pun intended. If you do buy one you will have a friend for life, I also have one and its my favorite in all my collection.

Yes, they are fantastic in almost any configuration.

Super reliable. Pure quality.

I love my National Match M1A, I just wish the ammo wasn't so expensive. Right now that rifle is far more accurate than I am, but I'm working on catching up to it.

Sounds like he has pretty much the same rifle as me, and that his experience with his rifle mirrors my experience with mine. Yes, it is superbly accurate and reliable. It is a little bit heavy if you're used to humping an AR. If you've been called on to haul around a 17 pound chainsaw, then traded that in as an 03 humping a SAW, 12 pounds of loaded .30 caliber rifle isn't all that bad.

I think I paid about $1300 for mine, NIB, but that was two years ago.

I've taken mine out to 600 yards with iron sights. At that range, seeing, let alone hitting a target of any normal size is difficult. But the challenge is fun and I highly recommend you try your luck if you get the chance.

I've shot some pretty decent rifles from ARs to custom .338s and a .50 caliber "sniper" rifle, but no other rifle is as comfortable and pleasant for me to shoot nor as easy for me to hit with as my M1A. I love my M1A. The only thing I hate about the rifle is its insatiable appetite and the cost to feed it.

The M1A is one of my favorite rifles out there. There might be cheaper, there might be more accurate, there might even be sexier too, but this rifle is a true performer!
