Does anyone have experience with the subject handgun. Looking for a good high capacity .45 and came across the S.A. XD model. No experience with the composite frames.

I had an XD40 before they came out with the XD45. It was a great gun but I sold it after getting a 1911 on a great deal because I couldn't afford both. This year I got my son an XD45 Compact (it comes with a 10 rd and a 13 rd Mag) and I "tested" it before and after delivery and watched him with it. A VERY good gun, very accurate, reliable, easy to disassemble, and good value for the $$$. I sleep easier knowing he has it.

Thanks, twigs. This gun is for my son also. Looks like a good price on this piece. 14 round capacity. I may buy one for myself as a match for my 1927A1

I have one.

I like it. It shoots well, operates perfectly, and points naturally. Recoil and followup shots are not a problem with full-power ammo.

It's simple, and the grip safety offers an additional level of reliability and safety (it locks the slide forward with just enough play to do a "press check" without accidentally ejecting a round or leaving the gun out of battery -- both easy to do with the springs on a .45ACP+P gun.)

It is a big, heavy gun, but only because it's a 14-round .45.:) It's not heavy for what it is.

That's a question I'd ask. Does he WANT such a big gun? Otherwise, I'd have no reservations.:)

Thanks Bear. He's a big kid. Size 12 shoe with hands to match. Shouldn't be a problem. I may want to get one to pair with my 1927A1 Tommy. Now that's a heavy. By the way, I have a daughter in your neck of the woods over in Malad. Thanks for the input.

I had one. It was a fine gun. I sold it in preference of my 1911s, which fit me better. You can't go wrong with one if it fits you. XDs are my favorite auto after 1911s.

I have all the major brands and I tend to like the XD lineup the best. Fit me well. I just wish they would do a .45 XD-m!.... even if it didn't hold more, just for the grip, backstraps and tighter fit.

I have an XD 45. its a great hand gun, eats all kinds of ammo, is rugged as hell and will always go bang. I like the loaded chamber indicatory and that you can see if its cocked.
The only thing I do not like is that it is hard to conceal, I would get a compact, the handle the the full size is just to long.

I too am hoping for an XDM in 45.

Loved it. The 5" tactical .45 was the one of the finest pistols I've owned. EXTREMELY accurate, very low recoil, stupidly reliable. Had to sell but will be buying another right quick.

I own several brands of handguns in .45 acp, including the XD, which has become my favorite. It's a pleasure to shoot, accurate and extremely reliable. I carry mine when I'm not carrying my 357 Sig XD. You won't go wrong with one.

Hope this helps.

I have a 5" Tactical that I love. It feels much larger than a 1911 in my hands. But then again, it holds many more rounds than most 1911's. The 5" is certainly not an ideal concealed carry weapon though.

Its likely due to operator error more than anything else, but both I and my friend have found the XD to be more accurate than his Kimber 1911.

jsamuel77,

Which one are you looking at??? The Service (4" barrel) or the Tactical (5" barrel). I have had a Service model since they came out a few years ago. It has been and exceptional gun for over 6000 rounds. I can put anything in the magazine and it will feed it reliably. It is accurate and has a decent trigger. The only thing I have done to mine is change to Tritium Fiber Optic night sights from TruGlo. I have qualified a perfect 250 with it twice for my Texas Concealed Handgun License. I carry it IWB in a custome holster from Brommeland Gunleather. The only gun I like better is my 4" custom 1911. I highly recommend the XD45.

What other use would the 5" have than a straight out combat/open carry/duty pistol? What a beastly weapon. I'm buying another SOON.

I have a XD45 Service with several thousand rounds through it. It's been flawless and it is the one gun I would depend my life on...and I have quite a selection of handguns to choose from!

I can't get enough of my XD45 5". I shoot up all the .45 ammo I can buy and all that my father can reload. I wish I was out shooting it right now! It is just one sweet hawg of a .45 to pound paper with. I think I might buy another one too.

I have 2 XDs, 45 Compact and 40SW SubCompact. I prefer the 40 because it fits my hand like a glove. I have put serious amount of round thru both without any problems. Both are as accurate as I can be. The 45 is part of the HD protection plan, the 40 is the auto protection plan.

IMHO, I think they are great firearms and wouldn't hesitate purchasing an XD again.

I shot many before I chose my first Poly gun. I ended up going with M&P, but the XD is fine weapon, and good choice.
