This will be as a general purpose .45 ACP shooter. Mainly an R&R range gun.

When I purchase a gun, part of the equation I consider is that I will hand it down to my children / grandchildren someday (my oldest is 15 so I've still got some time to play with my toys ).

I prefer to buy quality (buy once, cry once) but I also appreciate a bargain.

So, taking into account intrinsic value: build quality, quality of materials, reliability, accuracy and ergonomics

Extrinsic value: customer service, company reputation, resale value (even if I don't plan on selling it, it's nice to know that a given possession will hold value), U.S. made v. import.

With both of your statemments in mind you may want to buy a higher end 1911. Might I suggest a Springfield TRP for around 1300 or a Les Baer starting at 1500+. Of course both of those are out of my price range but maybe I can live vicariously through you.

Having both my preference is the Colt. The Springfield’s fit and finish (my example) is not on par with the Colt. Only having one example of each no conclusion can be reached in general terms.

Both are good 1911's for general consumer grade guns. IMO there is nothing wrong with owning either of them. You have a high probability of ending up with a great 1911 either way.

The new COLTs I have bought in the last 2yrs hold the edge (IMO) in fit and finish as well has having better small parts. I have seen a couple of COLT's on the internetz that were not as nice as mine.... but thats why I inspect before I buy. Like I said IMO there is a higher probability of getting a nice one from either company as oposed to getting a turd - but the turd is always out there and any company is capable of building it.

That said if I were to only buy one or the other - I would buy the COLT. The COLT will always be a COLT and will always hold the intrinsic value that only the COLT name has.
