Springfield Micro Saga

Springs

Jammer...Yours musta had a different recoil system than this one. The one I've got on the bench has a stacked primary and secondary, separated by a tube...sort of a small spring plug...that houses the inner spring as it compresses, and a flange that the outer spring butts up against. They can't get wound around each other. It reminds me a little of the Sprinco design, and works kinda on the same principle, except that the inner spring is longer than the Sprinco, with a VERY short outer spring. 8.5 coils and 2 inches free length.

Anyway...Gonna try to get over to the range early tomorrow to see if I've got the bugger runnin' to suit me. Dang thing don't even feel right when it recoils. Odd little contraption... :scrutiny:

Picture

Jammer,

The one in this one is an odd affair. There's a small diameter guide rod with the flange and a small spring that compresses into a tube that's the same diameter as a normal guide rod. It has a flange at the rear end for the outer spring to butt against. Sitting on the front of that is a short reverse-type plug with a cutout that rides on the barrel.

The outer spring compresses over the guide rod/tube that houses the small inner spring. The guide rod/tube keeps the two separate instead of having two reverse-wound springs like the old Colt officer's Models and the King's
systems. The two springs never come into contact, either in compression
or in their preloaded state. The two telescope like an old car antenna
and never touch. Sort of a two-stage, variable spring.

That ain't the same.

I liked the idea of YOU asking ME questions, though...

Someday, we'll have to talk about coffee, just so we can keep that going...

How accurate is that Springer? How is perceived recoil? Is it quick to return to target?

re:

Jammer... :D

2XS...The little gun is pretty accurate. Fallin' plates die steadily at 10 yards.
Felt recoil ain't bad, but the muzzle blast is killer with PMC. Don't even wanna
think about Winchester 230 HP. Actually fed those a little better than ball before the tweak was finished.

Why?

(Please, God. Tell me he's not gonna bring a Micro with him next month.)

Spring

Tuner, Don't guess this Defender spring would fit the Micro would it? If so, I have an extra you could try.

The frame of the Colt that I sent off for bluing is on the way back; thats the one you fitted a bushing to, replacing the collet. I may have to call on you to put the parts back in. I took em out several weeks ago but prob forgot how to put them back. :banghead:

re:

Thanks Ted, but I think I've got this puppy sorted out. (Did ya hear me down at the range today...around 8:30?) Had one failure to eject on the last round with a completely limp grip. As long as I took a reasonably firm grip...no problems at all in a hundred rounds. Fed everything like green grease thru an Autumn goose...from several magazines.

I'll probably clip another half-coil off the primary spring and see if I can get it to eject with a wimpy grip. Unless I can, I'll have to advise Joe not to carry it for anything serious. No guarantee of gettin' a good grip when things get informal.

I'll write up a post on what it took to bring everything into line on this thing.
It's been a learnin' experience for me. Main thing I learned is that I DON'T want a Micro. Dang variant that short is just wrong. Wonder when the marketers are gonna admit that the 1911 ain't aver gonna be a pocket pistol...

Which is what I've been saying all along ... :neener:

They'll keep making this stuff as long as people keep buying it - and not requiring THEM to fix it ... :cuss:

re: Fuff

Amen and Amen, Fuff. Odd as it may seem, I've got an early 1991A1 Compact/Officer's Model that's never missed a beat since I got the extractor right and upgraded the factory mag with a Wolff 11-pound spring. Eats everything I can throw at it. Go figger...

The two biggest problems with this Micro were short recoil and the ramp on the full-ramped barrel was too steep. The protractor insists that it was 28.5 degrees, give or take a minute. WAY too vertical! it now sports a two-stage ramp and feeds hollowpoints almost as smoothly as one of my 5-inch guns.
Yeh...I lost a tiny bit of case head support, but no cases even pretended to bulge today, so I guess I pulled it off. ;) Ya gotta look close with a strong light to even see the unsupported area. :scrutiny:

Anyways...just a little fine-tune and spit-polish, and I think she'll be okay.

George Nonte's brainchild, that became the Star PD, had a barrel that literally floated. Drop the slide into battery and push down on the hood and it would drop a mile or so ...

"What is this???" I ask, "this slop???" :what:

"It feeds," he said, "it feeds like a champ. The barrel can align itself with the incoming round." :scrutiny:

He was right, and at 50 feet mine will shoot into one ragged hole ... :D

Can't hide nuttin from you, Tuner! I found a litter of them little puppies and scooped 'em all 'cause I know you can fix 'em all. And you know how easy everything I bring is to tune  Wonder how many Fed X'd German Chocolate cakes Kelie will trade for a cute little Micro. Hmmm....Might have to talk to her about that. Then you'd have one to tune all the time.

I seem to remember a 3" (or was it 3.5" :) ) that visited the kitchen table. It didn't need tunin' and done good for part of a real pistol. Somebody there said it looked like a Glo...Glo... :barf: There's some words I just can't get out. Don't believe I'll push my luck on any more of those little things.

I'm Back

Finally made it back today.Looks like it was an interesting saga.I did learn a thing or two while I was gone, one being even my skinny butt can hide a gov't 1911 pretty good. There were only about 12-15 shots fired in the neighborhood I was in,but 6 of them were next door the last night I was there.Tuner,I'll get up with ya soon, everything that could go wrong at home while I was gone, did.Pray for the folks on the coast of MS.,it looks like a bunch of bombs went off.

Call me paranoid, but I was sleeping in a mold infested house on an air mattress w/hand on my 1911 all night, take a shower it's on the sink, out in the yard it's on me...none of the national guard or cops ever noticed, except for the dozen that were out at the house saturday night.:D

Hopefully this will give ya an idea,2 months after the storm.I have seen a lot of things, but the devastation there is undescribable, people are being ripped left and right too,a bundle of shingles normally 100-120 installed is 170-220 plus 800 in bull???? fees..

I would think that somebody in authority could and should step in and stop this. People that do this kind of thing should be jailed. :cuss:

i now have a perfectly functional compact / micro...

its called a SIG 245...:neener:

What kills me is the gov't is giving LA. everything and MS is almost forgotten. All the problems we encountered were from transients not the residents.I'll stop,I know this doesn't belong in the gunsmith forum..
