Ok, I just bought a new 4'' barrel service model XD in 9mm. I mainly got the gun to use in IDPA style shooting contests. That is the only reason I got a 9mm, usually I would have gotten it in .40 or .45. Anyway, I have two ammo questions. First, what ammo should I get to compete with. I bought a couple boxes of 115gr CCI Blazer ammo with the unreloadable aluminum casings for my Walther P1 but these rounds were not powerful enough to cycle the action on the pistol. What is the best round for an XD for this competition. Would the 115gr ammo crcle the gun. Second, what is a good ammo to get for defenceive use? While the gun will be really only used for commpetition, I would atleast want to get one box of ammo that I could load a magazine with if i ever needed to use it. Even though this is a competition gun, it is the newest and most reliable pistol I have and thats the reason why I would use it for both these purposes. Thanks.

i have had really good luck in my xd's with wwb as far as accuracy goes, if you want to buy the ammo for competition, but the best luck i have had with accuracy has came from handloads. 165gr rainier fmj's and power pistol powder, and then a load with titegroup came in a close second.

i have an XD 9 SC and haven't had any problems with it. i've fed all of the following without a hiccup:

WWB, CCI Blazer, CCI blazer brass, some PCI or something like that (what the shop had)

For SD, i use federal hydra shock 115 gr or Federal Hi Shok 147 grain.

I shoot a Glock 17 in IDPA comp. and almost always just use CCI Blazer. The accuracy is just fine. I don't think the distances shot in IDPA are far enough to even be concerned about accuracy. I have had people tell me Blazer can ruin your gun but after at least 3,000 rds or so, I have never had any problems. Its the cheapest way to shoot 9mm as far as I know. Sometimes the academy store near me has some stuff called "Monarch" that is a little less than Blazer.

I use Black Hills 124gr +P as my SD load.

For target shooting, whatever is cheapest. My XD's will feed anything I feed them.

As for the competition shooting you aren't really going to be able to make Major without reloading 9mm so the Winchester white box will do fine.
