I'm considering the purchase of a Springfield XD Tactical in 45acp. I've read several posts on several forums about the XDs and everyone raves about the accuracy that they're getting.

Define Accuracy:
How tight are the groups?
At what distances?
Factory ammo - yes or no?

I want to use this pistol for hunting varmints. Varmints = groundhogs, coons, feral cats, fox, coyotes, etc.
90% of all shots will be inside 25 yards.

Your opinions and experiences are appreciated.
Thank you, Bowhunter57

I don't have the specific numbers that you requested (I can try to get some for you when I go to the range tomorrow). But I can say that I carry my personally owned XD45 4" as my duty weapon and trust it for any situation. When I was last on the PD pistol range shooting very old military ball ammunition I was shooting offhand at 25yds and was keeping my rounds inside the head of my silhouette and a 4-5" circle in the body. I may have been able to keep it tighter but I had already been shooting and was beginning to get tired.

From what i have read, most XD's are 3-4" groups, like every other gun out there.

It is only the tigher gunls like Beretta's /1911's that get down in the 2"in range.

Inside 25yds you'll be fine on those animals if you do your part. If you shoot reloads stay away from lead SWC. A few of them will feed that ammo ok but most won't (including mine) and will FTE, jamming the round and beating the back of the magazine until it won't drop free. With jacketed bullets you should be fine.
You probably won't get one hole at 25 yards unless you find a load it really likes, but 3" or less is normal.

As with most modern pistols, they have the potential for much more accuracy than the average shooter. And I just put in a Powder River trigger kit that really tightened mine up.

Thank you, for all the replies, gentlemen! :)

The XD is an excellent weapon, for its' intended purpose. For my purposes, I may need to have a trigger job installed or look into a single action pistol for the accuracy that I'm looking to attain.

Good hunting, Bowhunter57

at 50 yds my xd service model outs up 4" groups and less. factory ammo

at 7yds, i can hit 12ga shotshells (expended) all day long with it. the xd line will not let you down in the accuracy dept. factory ammo

my xd's are exceptionally accurate even with factory ammo but with my handloads i am continually amazed.

I recently bought an XD9 Service (in SS) and for whatever reason can't shoot it nearly as well as I shoot my CZ 75B. I find it shoots a bit high and doesn't group well.

Of course, I'm a pretty lousy shooter, but the CZ compensates for that more than the XD9.

I had a chance to shoot my friends XD45 last weekend. It was the first time I'd ever shot a .45 too. I really liked it, but IMO, it did have much sharper recoil than 9/40 but it very well could have been that I had shot 250 rounds of .22 right before I tried it out. Anyway, at about 20 yards, I was able to make one ragged hole, maybe 2-3" so I really couldnt complain about accuracy at all. With a little more practice I can see myself getting the same kind of accuracy out to 30 yards and beyond. As far as I know, it was a stock XD45, no mods.

My XD45Comp Tac is not as accurate as a 1911 (DW PM7S), but for under 25yds, it should do just fine. The pic below is 14rnds rapid fire, 8-9yds using TFO sights, Don's fat guide rod, 20# recoil spring, and Blazer Brass ammo.
Sorry for the flyer:eek:

Powder River makes a great trigger kit for XDs for about $60.

i believe the standard of acceptable combat accuracy used to be 4" group at 50 yards from a roll-over prone position.

i know alot of folks don't have that available at their range...so maybe a 2" group at 25 yards?
