Does anyone know if the XD is +p+ rated? It doesn't say in my manual and I'm about to E-mail Springfield to ask but thought I'd ask here first.

I don't shoot +p+ for anything. or even +p's for that matter.
the recoil spring on the XD is pretty stout.

Odds are, you won't blow the gun up even if it's not rated for it. but, you should reconsider loading such a hot round. Shot placement matters a lot more than velocity. If you hit what you're aiming at, I'm pretty sure a regular strength load will stop a BG pretty well.

I load Federal hydrashock 9mm in my XD when I'm carrying.

All the European 9mm would be +P or +P+ in the US. I don't know why Americans insist on 3/4 throttle 9mms. The XD is a European design. It's unlikely that it wouldn't be up to the job for the normal European spec ammo. But you should contact Springfield to make sure. Don't believe me or anyone else.

Yes, nemoaz. I believe you are correct. I think i read somthing about that in the past.

Thats good advice and i will probably follow up with my letter to springfield.

Any idea were i might purchase some +p+ ammo?

There is no standard for +P+ ammo other than that it exceeds the specs for +P ammo. There is no upper limit. Any gun manufacturer that says you can use +P+ ammo will generally do so in a vague statement because technically you could make a totally unsafe load and call it +P+.

I really like Cor-Bon's 9mm +P ammo, but let me play a little devil's advocate here.

If you had researched +P+ ammo you no doubt would've come across who makes it and where it is sold. How is it that you've determined you need +p+ ammo without having any knowledge of the ballistics of said ammo? I find this particularly puzzling for a person with 1,345 posts.

Specifically, it is just plain ridiculous that you're looking for any old +P+ ammo because there is ammo rated as +P+ that performs much worse than ammo which isn't even rated as +P. If you were asking where to find Winchester Ranger +P+, that would be a legitimate question.

I contacted Springfield with the same question when I bought my XD9. They basically told me I was good to go...but just so you know, +P+ (and +P to a lesser extent) will accelerate wear and tear of the firearm, simply by virtue of the higher pressure. Also, +P+ ammunition has no upper pressure limit! +P+ means "more than +P".

I run 127gr +P+ Winchester Rangers through my XD, and have never had a single problem. Probably put about 500 through it now (and several thousand rounds of WWB range ammo).

Good luck.

i haven't shot them through mine, which partly has to do with the fact that my xd's are .40, and there are no +p ;loads in .40 because it is naturally so fricken great!:D no but really i have never had a desire to shoot +p+'s in a gun, in a 9mm 115gr +p is a great load, but i don't know about +p+'s that is a little much. though i would feel very safe and secure shootign them through an xd.

Glock does not have a vague statement, they say their guns are NATO spec guns and can handle +p+... all day long and twice on Sunday

Browning also stated their Hi Powers can handle +P+.

Beretta hemmed and hawed though...

Absolutely correct Tostada. It does indeed appear that i've gone about my information gathering in a bass akwards manner. It's true, my bad.

I blame finals week.

Anyhoo, I've been looking at getting another .357 mag. Then, being short on money, i got to thinking about a thread years ago where we argued that a +p+ load (ranger i believe) did as well in the velocity dept as a .357 sig which duplicates the 125 grn .357 mag, IIRC.

This got me thinking "Where COULD I get +p+ 9mm ammo that duplicated the velocity of the .357 sig load?" and "Would the 9mm I already have handle that?"

Hense this thread.

if you load your own, you'll note how many times you see "never ever exceed the maximum listed here" uh, makes sense to me...especially since one manual was a Hodgdon manual, and they have a vested interest in you using more powder, not less.

So, if it were me, I'd trust my life to shot placement....and putting a 9mm hole in a piece of paper shouldn't take 15,000,000 fps.
