I was just wondering if anyone knew of any plans to come out with a Springfield XD in .45 ACP. I suppose I could e-mail Springfield and find out, but I thought someone might have done that already. I have just heard a lot of really good things about these guns.

If not, well, it's not like I have a 9mm in my collection yet. May be a good excuse to remedy that.

If they did it wouldn't be your normal XD.... it would be larger in the frame.
Remember the HK USP? It came out in .40 and 9MM and then later in a larger .45... they are completely different guns. The XD would be the same way. Even in .45GAP because it would require a beefier slide. And if your going to have a beefier slide, why bother with the GAP carridge?
The idea of the GAP is interesting... but the practical application proves less attractive than the idea.
I'd go for a full sized .45ACP XD with little hesitation because to have a bulkier gun that I can get ammo for without special ordering is a bonus to me rather than a bulier gun with a slightly smaller grip that I can't get ammo for. Maybe I'd see things different if there was BLAZER loads for the GAP and 100 round white box bulk packs at the wallyzone, and all the ammo makers had a good solid line up of choices for the GAP... Until then, and maybe even after, I'll stick with the traditional ACP.

June's American Rifleman has a big write-up about the .45GAP XD. It doesn't specifically say that there's no slide width increase, but it suggests there isn't because it mentions that the designers didn't have to change much other than the magazine lips, breechface, and extractor to accomodate the larger case.

Personally, I'm not currently much interested in the .45GAP, but I'm seriously thinking of picking up an XD in 9mm or .40.

I am not an engineer or designer, but IMO this gun would have to be substantially redesigned to be practical in .45 ACP. To keep the same grip size it would have to be a single-stack with, at most, a seven- or eight-round magazine. (This would not bother me.) To make it a double-stack 10-round .45 would require a substantially larger grip. I have handled XDs before, and its well-shaped grip and trigger reach is one of its best attributes.

Glock can squeeze ten rounds (twelve LE?) in a G17 grip. SA should be able to squeeze ten in a XD grip. Glock's problem was they had to go to a G21 size slide for the GAP which defeated the purpose of the GAP (which was to be a .45 in a 9/40 size handgun). Maybe SA can pull it off (and beat Glock at their own game).
