I bought a black Friday Remington 700 SPS varmint 308 at Dick's for $350, and plan to use it for bedding practice and experimentation. It came with the cheap plastic stock that isn't pillar bedded or free floated. I installed Leupold bases, and Burris signature 30mm rings for a Vortex Viper 6.5-20x44, 30mm scope. I used a few Prvi 308's to get it on paper, then switched to Winchester 180grn Power Points to try a group. The results were disappointing. At 100 yds.

But when we switched to Federal Gold Medal Match, things improved considerably.

Over the winter, I plan to pillar bed, and glass bed the action, then free float the barrel. As flimsy as the stock is, I believe I will be glassing in some aluminum angle that I have laying around. I will hopefully be adding pics of work done, and corresponding groups shot along the way. Hopefully I can make an improvement. If not, at least I may learn something along the way.
Btw, the Vortex was one of the discontinued wideplex reticles from cameraland, and was only $279. So, thus far I have a grand total of $700 in the whole package.

I have a SPS Varmint in 7mm-08 with the factory stock. Before I reloaded I shot many kinds of factory ammo through it and it was very picky. Everything shot okay but it loved Remington Core-lokts. No B.S. sub moa groups @ 100. Then I got a different lot # Core Lokts and those shot like crap. There was a visible difference in the shape of the bullet from the lot it prefered to the one it didn't. That's what motivated me to reload. Also, my bore copper fouls pretty quick and I can see tool marks at the muzzle so I figure the rest of the bore has them as well.

Good luck getting the stock to be any better. I believe it is supposed to contact the barrel for rigidity. It may get real flimsy if free floated. Just my .02. Have fun w/ the project!

That is why I plan to add aluminum the full length of the fore arm. And if it doesn't work, I have HS precisions number.
