According to Roy Jinks' History of S&W the 2.5" 19s were round butt. I never say never where S&W is concerned but it's very unlikely any SB 2.5" 19s were made.
i had one but the 4 inch barrel had been changed to a 21/2 , i never saw one come from the factory that way gun had a good feal but i traded it off *csa*
Any 2.5" S&W model 19 with a square butt has more than likely had a barrel transplant. There may have been some FACTORY made but it would be a rare and uncatalogued revolver. There's a good way to tell. The frames are different on the 2.5" ones as compared to the 4" and 6" ones.
On the 2.5" ones, the top strap is straight all the way to the barrel. On the 4" and 6", the top strap is cut low at the area near the front end of the rear sight (above and slightly in front of the barrel pin)...a 2.5" barrel on a square butt four or six inch frame leaves a gap.
Several mutants out there in existence however. As I'm punching the keyboard at this moment, I have this one hanging in an old Jackass shoulder rig...we're best of buds! I replaced the 4" barrel with a 2.5" one.
