I'm a revolver noob....

I just picked up a 6" S&W Model 19. Looking to get some replacement grips for it. How do I tell if it has a square or round butt frame?

TIA

Take the grips off.. Round butt will be round, and square butt will be flat on the bottom and come to a point at the rear of the grip.

Guys, thanks for the quick replies. :)

Now a supplymentary question... is there a way to tell from the exterior of a set of grips if they are made for either square or round butt frames?

Square butt grips will have the rear opening for the frame going all the way down.

Round to square conversion grips will have the rear opening much shorter, ending about 1/2 the way down, where the round butt frame starts to curve forward.

I would prefer a roundbutt as I can always get conversion grips the other way.

Going to a gunshop to ask for grips that convert squarebutt to round is like going into a consumer electronics place looking for a DVD rewinder.

It's entertaining but not really useful.
