Squirrel dogs - anyone have one?

Not really, but I've seen a real squirrel dog work. They are fun to watch.

My wife and I adopted a Jack Russel/Chihuahua mixed breed that used to love chasing them. She couldn't catch them though. She is old now and needs help getting up the stairs.

Never used a dog.
I just use a stick.
Find a nice place to sit down, rustle leaves around with stick.
Squirrels come running thinking their missing out on a meal.

I had a good friend that would run Jack Russels on squirrels. It was always fun to hunt with them. When I was a teenager, I would take mom's Australian Terrier with me when hunting squirrels with a pellet rifle. She did really good as long as I used air rifles, she didn't like the sound of 22LR or shotguns.

I have seen a pair of blue heelers tree just about every animal that can get up one and bark all afternoon until someone shows up. They were great at it but not very animal specific.

I enjoy calling squirrels but do it more for fun than food.

I just lost this one. She was 14.5yr old. Off of field trial stock. (Yes, there are at least two organizations that I’m familiar with that breed/field trial “Feist”.)

Her replacement is sitting in my lap as I tap this.....
16week old “Mountain Feist” as the breeder called it...[/ATTACH].

What breeder did you get your new pup from?

Let me know if you need help carrying all your squirrels back to the truck! I love squirrel hunting, ever since I found out they are hunted with dogs I’ve been wanting to see them in action.

Never had a dog to hunt with. Because I was alone I carried a ball of kite string. Find a productive spot/tree and tie the string to a bush. Walk directly past trunk to opposite side and sit down. Wait a couple minutes for squirrel to move then tug on string. The squirrel will come around to your side and flatten against branch or trunk.

Wish I'd had a dog; would have been more fun.

Had a mountain fiest growing up. Always barked at the squirrels in my yard. So when i was 10-12ish I decided to get him one. Took the longest shot of my life with a pump bb gun my cousin gave me. Pumped it up 100 times. Leaned against the clothes line took my time and bam. Squirrel tumbled down. Drug skipper over to it. He looked at it bite it and walked away. Couldn’t take him hunting he would have run off. I miss that old dog.

Some of y'all have no clue what a real squirrel dog is.
I'm referring to a dog that will tree a squirrel based on sight, smell, and sound and then keep the squirrel trees until you shoot it out. I'm not talking about your everyday dog/pet that chases a squirrel across your yard and up a tree in the backyard.
Search for "treeing feist", "mountain feist", or "treeing cur" on YouTube to see what I'm talking about.

Having said that he loves to tree squirrels and will faithfully follow them from tree to tree and wait days for them to come down.
He also retrieves and doesn’t eat raw meat (go figure).
I plan to work with him and a long training lead this summer.

Sort of:

She finds All Squirrels are An Offense To All That Is Right. (Also possum, passing cats, foxes, crows & bluejays, too.)
She also has ADD pretty bad, too. Whatever mix she is, there's enough Spaniel there that she'll "point" reflexively, then usually bolt at warp speed about 200 milliseconds thereafter.
Probably would be about useless for hunting, if well-behaved on a leash. She has cute not bright on her side.

Other than not liking the sound of 22's or shotguns, my Australian Terrier was an excellent squirrel dog when I use air rifles. She would start right at the base of the tree until I shot the squirrel. My buddies Jack Russel was an excellent squirrel dog too.
