Hello,

Last night I drilled and tapped my M1969.

Here's the setup I have on it now. It's 19*F and I'm going to try to site it in. Can't find my bore sighter, but that's ok.

If I do well, I'll post groups here.

Later...

It seems to like Remington subsonics the best. I tried CCI subsonics, but they seem to shoot to a way different point of aim than everything else. But, by the time I got through with the Remington and Federal stuff, I was pretty worn out. I shot one huge group with CCI Mini-Mags, then settled down and shot almost as well as with the Remingtons. I think that if I started out fresh, the CCI Mini-Mags would tie for accuracy with the Remington subsonic.

I really need to get more CCI Mini-Mag Hollowpoint to try - I found I'm almost out, not enough to sight in, and I don't feel like running back into town.

I really hope I'm wrong about the CCI subsonics shooting funky, because I do want a subsonic HP load that shoots well, and someone on another board says that according to his tests, the Remington stuff doesn't expand - and it's the only subsonic that doesn't.

Any more info on them expanding or not, anyone?

Here are the pics, both Remington subsonic HP 40gr loads at 50 yards:

... and BINGO!

Not bad for leaning over a truck hood... :)

I think it's like a law of nature or something that when you're shooting for accuracy, three out of five rounds will touch and two will fly. I don't like this and really have to get it figured out. My Mosin does the same thing.

The 'scope is something in and of itself. I've never heard of the company - FM - but it seems to be a quality product. I'm hoping it's a relatively unknown company that's selling their products cheaply (about $50 for this fixed 4x lighted reticle version) that will end up doubling in price once a good reputation is established.

I'm also looking forward to trying out this lighted reticle. I have my choice of green or red, with five intensity settings on each. I put a 'scope on nearly every .22 I owned - heck, Dad 'scoped my first Daisy BB gun for me! - and there have been several times when a lighted reticle would have been handy.

I've never had a 'scope where there was a manual adjustment for yardage either. Parallax adjustment, or what? Anyone?

Hopefully I'll get to shoot some more .22 ammo tomorrow, and find an reliable expander that this rifle likes.

Is that the Romanian M1969 trainer? Where did you get yours?! I'm hunting for one now.

It sure is. I got it back when they were plentiful. I was actually just looking for a cheap squirrel rifle, and have since been told that they were manufactured by CZ, thus their accuracy. I don't know how true this is, but it does shoot better than I can!

Not safe But it is a nice gun.

Private property, private shooting range :D

How is it not safe? I know of some larger calibers cracking windshields with muzzle blast, but I've shot up to a Mosin M44 carbine off the thing and it was no worse for the wear.

However, if there's something I'm overlooking, I'd like to know about it.

Thanks,

I too, would like to know the downside of using the truck's hood as a rest. Usually throw a beanbag on it if I have one handy, or if not, I lay my left arm on the hood and use it as a rest to if anything, elevate the barrel a bit of the hood to avoid any damage. Shoot everyone I have ever been hunting with has done this. I do know a guy here in Laramie that used the driver's side of his bed to draw a bead on an Antelope out on the passenger's side of the vehicle. Must have bumped his scope, or something, but he ended up putting a nice little hole on the inside of his bed, and nicer, even bigger hole on the outside of the passengers bedside....brand new truck, still had temp tags o it...hehehe...and no, he didn't get his 'lope either.

I've been using a scoped, Remington 511 with Remington Subsonic ammo for years for bushy tails.

Back in '90 I spent several days over the summer trying different ammo. I bought a box of just about everything I could find. CB's, BB's and Winchester Wildcats were by far the worst for groups as I recall. some of the pricy target ammo was tops but I felt it was a little cost prohibitive at something like $7.00 per box.

I concluded that for the money, Remington Thunderbolt was the best for plinking and Reminton Subsonic was best for squirrel hunting, at least in my Rem 511.

Good luck in your search for the ammo you rifle like best!

Josh, I also recently purchased a "FM" scope in 3x-9x-40mm. It seems to be an ok product so far. It's been holding its zero and it gathers light pretty well. I was told the company is out of Illinois and is just getting started. Hopefully we got lucky and found a diamond in the rough!

I believe FM is the importer of Famous Maker scopes. Low end stuff out of China...that said, even very low end scopes have decent optical quality these days with computer controlled glass polishing.

Well, I guess it can't be worse than Tasco... I had one of those a few years ago on a semi-auto. The thing would not hold a zero at all. I thought it was the gun until I put a red dot on it to troubleshoot.

Hopefully this won't fail... I figure if it would have failed, it would have done it by now. Had several hundred rounds' worth of fun this afternoon. :)

Wait, aren't we going to get an explanation of why shooting over a hood isn't safe? I know all the stories about guys pumping rounds through the hood itself, and I have heard the stories of windsheilds shattering, but I shoot my .22 across my hood all the time and have done so for years. No holes in the hood, no apparent safety concerns....

Hello,

I do have some SR-1 targets printed out, but I find these just work better. Those stickers are the exact same size a dime.

Like the SR-1 target, there's no "noise" in the background to distract from the shot.

But yeah... I'm cheap too! :D
