Over the years I have shot a large variety of handguns, but I have to say that none has ever felt as good in my hand as the Ruger SR22!

The problem is, it's a .22. If it were a larger caliber, say .380 or 9mm, I'd carry that thing every day.

Can anyone make a suggestion as to what would be the closest thing? The only one I can think of would be the Walther PK380, but I didn't like that one due to the lack of a slide stop and slide mounted safety.

The odds of Ruger "upgrading" the SR22 to a .380 has to be about one in a million, given their array of pocket pistols, so any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Well Ruger is definitely not going to retool the entire pistol to handle centerfire rounds. You might just go down to the gun store and start handling guns and see if you can't find something from SIG/Glock/XDm that fits your hand as well.

Isn't the SR22 a copy of the Walther/Umarex P22?

Look at the P99 or the PPQ.

If you can, get your hands around a Walther PPQ. To me, they look and feel pretty similar and the PPQ has the best out of the box trigger of any polymer handgun on the market. Much larger of course, but great guns.

Doubtful you could make it work in .380 or 9mm. The design MIGHT be strong enough for .32ACP (maybe not - that's just a "maybe" on my part) but there's not much interest in new .32ACP's these days.

Look at the P99 or the PPQ.

The SR22 is not a copy of the P22. It shares a similar role (tactical-looking .22LR plinker) and appearance, but is mechanically unrelated.

The Umarex-made P22 has nothing in common with the Walther P99/PPQ, other than general aesthetics (its looks copy that of the P99 pistols). The P22 neither feels nor operates like a P99 or PPQ.

the PPQ has the best out of the box trigger of any polymer handgun on the market.

The PPQ trigger is excellent, but the honor of the best trigger in a striker-fired polymer handgun goes to the Walther P99AS. The AS (Anti-Stress) trigger's single-action mode is both lighter and smoother than the PPQ's trigger, and shares the PPQ's crispness and extremely short and tactile reset.

The gun is an aluminum slide blow back. Even .380 would require a steel slide and larger grip changing the ergos of the gun completely. Try an SR9C would be my suggestion. I love my SR22, great plinker, quite accurate, and easy to carry afield.

Uh, thankfully, NO. There's no zinc in the SR22.

No, the Ruger is a much nicer pistol. Its actually made from real aluminum. I own both.

Umarex guns are junk and the P22 is no exception.

You may want to check out something in the M&P line if you want something that feels great in your hand.

Walther also has that 380 that's something like the p22, which is somewhat in the style of the SR22.

FWIW I carry my SR22 when fishing....great little pistol. I've also carried it some when hunting also. A few thousand rounds without one "non-ammo" induced failure. Not as accurate as a MK series but still a great little pistol.

Having ten Ruger handguns, I guess I might be called a Ruger fanboy. But,,,,, the SR22 was the worst P O S I ever owned. Got it new and swapped it off after 20 rounds.

Bersa Thunder .380.

Aluminum frame (steel slide), DA-to-SA trigger/hammer mechanism, and blowback-operated like the Ruger.

It does have a slide-mounted safety (actually, a de-cocker), but it also has a slide-stop.

I love mine, having owned it since 2008. I carried it for two years before a Kel-Tec PF9 came on board. But, it's far more enjoyable to shoot than the KT is. I do still carry the Bersa from time to time; I just like its feel and heft compared to the KT.

Are you okay with hybrid-DAO or DAO-action mechanisms? If so, what do you think of the LC9 and LC380 Rugers?
