Im looking to get an overall opinion on stag arms line of AR-15's. How do they compare to other brands. Mainly talking about DI guns

I can't speak about complete rifles but I recently built an m-4'gery with a Stag lower (stripped), barrel and bolt carrier assembly. The fit was excellent with parts from other manufacturers. Better than many others I've seen and the Colt I owned. If you are looking for something in 6.8 SPC I would go with something different as far as a barrel though. There are too many questions about chamber specifications/feed ramps/rifling twist. Otherwise I think they make a great product.

I had a Stag for a while. Nothing wrong with it. I never used it hard so I can't claim to know how it would run abused or how long. My gas key was staked properly. Other than that, it shot what I gave it.

Although I would recommend something a few bucks more, like BCM or Spikes, Stag makes a great product for the money.

The new Stag Model 3 I worked with a couple months back has done something no other production AR has been able to do- broken my longstanding no-reason-to-own-any-AR-but-a-Colt personal policy. :)
Not the first Stag I've worked with, but the quality's there & I like the configuration.

This one joins my three Colts, and that didn't happen without some thought.

What class does stag belong to? Lower, Mid, Upper? And how does this compare to other brands such as bushy, RRA, dpms, colts, and smith and wesson?

Stag would be right with RRA, bushmaster, and dpms. Some may be a little more accurate (RRA) than the Stag, but the corners cut are often similar. Colt would be a step or two up from that group, at least in reliability. Not to say a Colt can't malfunction or the others can't run flawless, just that on average the Colt has done quite a few things right that the others may skip.

I had a Stag Model 2 lefty. No problems good rifle! But if I was going to buy another it would be Spikes Tactical mid-length! I have one now and love it!

Stag arms parent company is contenental machine and tool which has been making parts for AR's since the Vietnam war. Stag Arms makes some very nice rifles. I have the Model VI rifle which it one of 5 AR's I own from various manufacturers and it has been fantastic.

I would rank Stag at mid-tier, above DPMS and Bushmaster and probably right in line with RRA and S&W in terms of quality, but below Colt, BCM, DD, LMT, etc.

Flame on!

Stag advertises their products are zeroed before shipping. In my case, they weren't kidding. First time out I hit every thing I aimed at at a local ranch. It was so accurate it got kinda boring.
I have owned Colt, Bushmaster and still have some RRs.
Also a retro XM177 with Spud upper/lower and a BM barrel.

I agree navajo, mine right out of the case was a tack driver. I've had my L-1 for a few years, and love it to death. MUCH better than that Colt Uncle Sam loaned me to carry years ago.

I've got a complete Stag m4gery that has been nothing but perfect. Bought it as basically a parts set, and put it together. Threw a decent red-dot on it, and it has never failed to impress.

It is my "newbie gun" that I loan out to new shooters, mainly due to its 100% reliability and drop-dead accuracy.

So if cmt makes most parts for both stag and colt for example why is colt so much more sxpensive and considered to be a no brainer superior product?

"If you have an early production S&W M&P-15 it is a Stag."

I was told the same thing from the dealer I ordered my stripped lower through.

I had a Stag that I bought used and I wasn't impressed with it. I actually just bought it for parts so I never actually fired it, but the general fit and finish seemed about on par with a Bushmaster. It was functional but nothing special. IMHO they're not bad, just overpriced, but since everyone else seems to like them I think mine might have just been a lemon.

Because the letters "COLT" are much more epxensive to put on a gun. :neener:

Because they don't. But even if they did remember that just because parts come from the same place doesn't mean the quality is the same. materials used, QC required, etc. All this goes into the level of quality you see in the end.

Good question. There is an answer though.

First, while CMT may in fact make some parts for Colt, they do not make all of those parts for them.

Secondly, they don't finish them always either. Colt may receive a part from CMT but they will often be the one finishing the part and they will also be the one that tests that part before it leaves their facility to make sure it has passed THEIR standards. For instance, we know that Colt HPT/MP tests EACH bolt as well as properly stakes their carrier keys, a difference between them and Stag.

Lastly, Colt may in fact call for the part they get from CMT to be of higher quality than the ones that CMT will turn out for another manufacturer, such as Stag. For instance, we all know that Colt uses a higher quality barrel steel and a different bolt carrier than Stag (auto vs semi auto).

I like Stag. They make one of the better quality AR15's in their price range, but they are not the best.

For the occasional weekend shooter, will the extra cost and quality be justified and appreciated by purchasing a colt?

Colts are a little pricey but if you want Colt quality at a better price point, check out Spikes or BCM.
