Hello, ive been looking for a good assault rifle before obama gets elected and doubles the price. And two that have caught my attention are stag and rock river arms they are both about 1k. Ive also heard about DPMS. Keep in mind i know nothing about ar15's.

I've heard good things about RRA. But i own a DPMS (ap4 - 308) and its been great, both as a deer rifle and a target rifle. I don't think you'll go wrong with any of these though.

For precision shooting, the scuttlebutt from the HiPower shooters is to get a RRA lower and a complete upper from White Oak Arms.

Put it together yourself (as a first timer, I took my careful, sweet time and it took me about 4 hours one evening)

I would pick Rock River all day over Stag. I've handled a couple Stags and was not impressed at all with the quality. Rock River is really nice stuff and DPMS makes a great product for the price too.

You should be looking at $700-800 to step into a DPMS or Rock River AR.

I own and shoot a Rock River for both high power and a LE tactical for fun. Both are flawless in fit, finish and function. RRA sends almost everything out with one of their match triggers as a bonus.

I've shot a Stag Arms gun and it was ok, nothing to write home about. You can settle for bland, but why do that is this is the only Ar you are going to buy before the Obamamessiah is annointed.

I have owned nothing but Rock River and am a happy camper. Never had the desire to look for anything else.

For buying a complete rifle, I would give the nod slightly to RRA, although I have nothing against Stag. In fact, my latest rifle is an RRA complete lower with a Stag 2H upper. It is my favorite gun in the safe. Accurate, and dead nuts reliable.

take whichever one you can get for the best price. almost equal quality. i know this wasnt in your list but if you can get a bushmaster for the same then get it.

I would and do chose Stag Arms over RRA. The quality of Stag Arms compared to RRA is no contest.

Stag/CMT produce the rough forgings for RRA. RRA then sends these out to local machine shops near their "facility". They're no better than assemblers.

You can't even begin to compare the barrel quality of RRA to that of Stag. The fit and finish of their uppers and lowers is top notch.

I wouldn't own or sell anyone a DPMS. Several customers have had DPMS, once they compare them to the quality of Stag or LMT the DPMS dissappear.
Nobody bothers with DPMS unless they're looking for cheap.

In regards to RRA's two-stage trigger. It is a nice trigger, they are prone to lose the first stage and become single stage triggers with long pulls. This is easily remedied though.
I do have to ask why would you want a two stage on a home/personal defense weapon though?
I have all my "duty" weapons set up with single stage, factory/GI triggers at 5 pounds.

RRA is not junk, but, there are better options available. Stag, Bushmaster, LMT, and Colt to name a few.

I'm sure the Stags are sweet, but I vote for RRA. I (like LoneGunMan above) own one for competition (Predator Pursuit), and a carbine for fun. Quality is superb, accuracy is so good that I don't even like to mention specifics, (I'm accused of lies), and the triggers are excellent out of the box. (I shot a friend's Stag, and hated the trigger...)

You can't go wrong with an RRA...:)

RRA barrels suck eh? Is that why they guarantee 1/2" moa?

Where did I say they sucked?
I can build you an upper and guarantee 1/2" MOA, so what?
Their Pro Government AR offers 1 1/2" MOA for only $2300. I think that's built for mall ninjas or something. Same thing with their Elite Comp, their Varmint rifles only offer 3/4" MOA.
That's all pretty much a meaningless marketing ploy.
IMO, they're overpriced and don't offer alot of value. I don't like that chrome lining is an option instead of coming standard.

I paid around $800 each for mine... I had to add sights to the PP... Lot's of bang for the buck there. I looked into building one, but when you can walk into a shop and buy it off the wall for around eight bills, why bother?

I'm thinking that I've read, several times, that Stag was made by RR. Anyone able to confirm or deny?
Also, most of what I've read gives thumbs up to them both.I can only speak about the RR lower I have mated to a Colt upper. No problems, good gun.

CMT (Continental Machine and Tool) http://www.continentalmachinetool.com/ makes parts and forgings for alot of AR manufacturers, including RRA.
Stag is CMT's answer to making their own ARs.

RRA manufactures nothing. They are at best assemblers. They do some metal finishing and that's pretty much it, just like alot of other "manufacturers".

Stag/CMT make quality, top notch parts including special runs for the military. Their customer service is second to none. RRA makes nothing.

My decision was that the parent company of Stag produces many/most of the parts for other AR manufacturers.

Also great customer service, warranty.

From just what I have seen, Stag makes a very good rifle but RRA's assemblers provide a very good rifle with better fit and finish.

YMMV.

DPMS and RRA aren't in the same league as Stag. For $1000 you can also geta a Charles Daly DM4LE, which is one of the best quality AR-15s available at that price point. If you can go another $200 you get an LMT though.

If you really want to learn about AR-15s, read this http://m4carbine.net/showthread.php?t=6642, and decide what's important to you. Then buy accordingly.

My "slight nod to RRA" comes from the fact that RRA has more factory choices, you can get a stainless bbl. if desired, and at least in my area, RRA has a little better resale value than Stag should you decide to move it for something else. Absolutely nothing wrong with Stag in my eyes.

DPMS has great lowers to build on, but that is about as far as I would go with them. I don't think they are horrible, but they seem to have their own "standard" on many of their parts.

After owning some Oly Arms rifles, I can honestly say I wouldn't suggest them either.

As far as being "just assemblers", Colt doesn't make much in house either, yet they seem to be sort of a grail to many.

It's all about the end result...best features, quality, value for your buck. I will not pay the going price for a Colt. I like Bushy rifles, but when I can get a chrome lined Stag or RRA cheaper, that will suit my needs just fine. I don't really feel you can go wrong with most of the choices out there. I have a J&T kit on a stripped Superior lower with a RRA lower parts kit, a factory Bushy upper on a stripped DPMS lower with a RRA lower parts kit, and a Stag complete upper on a complete RRA lower. Not had a problem out of any of them, and they were all done cheaper than buying a factory built rifle.

If and when I get around to building another rifle, I will most likely go with Stag, or RRA, or a mix of both again.

There is my opinion, and its worth what you paid for it.

Buy, shoot, enjoy, rinse...repeat.:)

My most common build is a DPMS lower with RRA parts. That's excellent economy and quality!

Don't Stag make those Smith&Wesson ARs?

They did, or at least used to. A lot of those S&Ws have billet receivers, though, so idk the whole story there (I believe they are made by Sun Devil?). I've got to choose my words carefully there because I can't prove any of it, it's just what I've heard :p

But, lots of ARs share manufacturers for parts. And any nimrod with the right tools can put one together. While stag builds a good gun, I don't look down on cheaper brands either. Put the right parts in one, and it will run just as well.

They only made the very early ones. Apparently they were using the parts that weren't good enough for their own guns, because many Stag assembled S&Ws were built with out of spec receivers. S&W brought assembly in house rather quickly.
