Between black coffee, and shiftn' gears
Personal opinion, observations and thoughts.

I grew up in a time and era, with different attitudes and perspective on life as we have today.
Parents, parented, and folks passed forward.
Folks Mentored, and I often refer to those that shaped my life, and still do, as Mentors and Elders.

Aunts, Uncles, Grandparents, Neighbors, Teachers, Clergy, and any and everyone - Mentored not only their kids, and kinfolks, also were available and willing to assist another.
Men, women, young, old, physically limited - it mattered not.

Software, and hardware was passed forward.
I want to address hardware, yes, the guns and all in this thread.

Human nature is what it is.

Shoes for instance. Walking shoes for a brat learning to walk, later tennis to run and play in, then age creeps up, and various aches, pains and infirmities creep up and Orthopedic shoes are needed.

Yeah a kid is going to have feet looked at by an adult and "what are those ridiculous things on your feet?
Kid is looking at the "old ladies/ old mans" foot wear and thinking the same thing about a older person.
Neither one is "wrong" just each in their stage of life.

A kid had a right to be a kid, going through normal stages of development.
Elderly person has lived longer, has more life experiences.

By the time a kid is 16 years old, they are the smartest persons in the Universe.
The Older Person each year realizes each year they are getting "dumber" and have been getting "dumber" since about 16 if they are honest.

Hence the adages :
The older I get, the dumber I get.
or
The Older I get, the more I realize what I don't know.

Maturity is not a age dependent thing.
Rebelling is not either.

20/20 hindsight is always clearer. WE all have regrets, we all wish we had not gone through some stages in life, and we wish we could take back some words, attitudes and behaviors.
Called being human.

Folks change with time, what once was important, is not so important. Priorities change, interests change and people change.

Guns, and other hardware.

This is why some come full circle and realize why the ones they poked fun at, must have been attending night classes, as these dumb folks are now smart.

One will note, many times when a "dumb" person asked " what on earth do you need that for?" - It was not talking down, not to boost their ego or self esteem - instead to get YOU to question yourself and be brutally honest.

It was also for them to learn from you, these folks know they are dumb, and getting dumber each day. They might be asking to learn from you.
They will be brutally honest and have to swallow pride and ego and - while that gun, would be great for a use - they cannot physically do that activity.
Maybe running and gunning and doing 3 gun, and that set up sure makes sense...just getting around hurts bad enough, and that damn grocery store is just too damn big to shop in. That small Mom&Pop was easier to get around in...and well...acceptance is the key, just hurts not being able to do what once could.

Revolvers get to making sense. Simple, used ones more affordable, and the gun not being dependent on ammunition, means - well phooey, one can load light to teach a new shooter, or load up for more serious use.

20 gauge shotguns tote easier, and fells game just fine. No more wading out to go duck hunting, body won't let them.
Younger person takes note of this, gets a 20 bore, and has a ball shooting clays, doves, small game too...and again, a tool to teach another.

.22 rimfire. Kids grew up learning to shoot with a single shot rifle, and skills transitioned to other rifles.
Pistols learned with a .22 rim-fire too, then transitioned to centerfire.

Money was tight, and these rim-fires afforded lots of fun, with quality practice, and put food on the table.

Kid gets bigger and that cute boy, or cute girl wants to go plink. Maybe learn to shoot. Again, that .22 rim fire is not so antiquated or worthless after all.
Couple of kids, broke, and cupid shooting arrows all around and the old geezers get asked if they can borrow that "old thang".

Maybe that niece, nephew gets bigger and - "Aunt/Uncle do you have something my size I can learn on?"
You gotta a niece, nephew looking up at you, with big wanting eyes and they really want to hear "yes I do".

Kids of your own and your kid gotta something to learn on?
Not real sure a 11# shotgun with mag extension, Surefire, Side Saddle and 00 buck is a great first gun to let your own kid shoot...

This is why some sell off that stuff they do, they went through that stage, had some good times, met some good folks, and have memories.

That 3" Revolver, that 20 gauge shotgun, that .22 rim-fire handgun, that lever action in 30-30 ...etc., catches their attention.
Nothing wrong with this other hardware, just, well, darn old stages of life , just do stuff like this.

Neat is a little lady shooting a 1929 Colt Detective Special with Speer Plastic bullets - "this gun is older than my grandma and grandpa" and scrunches her nose.
Grandma is shooting her old .22 single shot.
Grandpa is shooting a Pink Cricket - and being a typical male, it does not match his shoes...
Granddaughter didn't say anything about that though...;)

That first rabbit stew from the first rabbit he landed he will now never forget. Even if it is 20% rabbit and 80% beef.... :)

Certainly not a good first gun but a great third or fourth gun.... Don't want them sliping into complacency.... thinking it is too easy and they got nothing to learn.... falling on your but can be a real good lesson at the right time and place...

Grandpa is shooting a Pink Cricket

Times have changed some but not that much... Paw-paw will not get behind a pink anything....
