Stainless GI recoil spring guide?

SS Guide

Never seen one, but since ya can't see it unless the gun's apart...why does it matter? You can sand the bluing off of one and oil it. Probably won't rust for years, even without further attention.

The other alternative is to part off a stainless full-length rod, face it off to length, and form-turn the front contour in a lathe. About 10 minutes, tops.

Thanks Tuner.

Most of my Caspian build will be stainless (including the Bar-sto barrel) and I just wanted the guide rod to match. Not a big deal...

If no one else chimes in with a post on where to buy a stainless GI version, I'll probably order the Brown and leave it as is. If the blue really starts to nag on me, I may cut a FLGR down to size.

As I said, its just frustrating that there are hundreds of stainless FLGRs but no stainless GI ones...

Guide rods are a subject near and dear to my heart. There are so many variations. People get so worked up over the different variations.

The bottom line is that almost all of the variations work. The plastic ones have a short life, but even they work well for a short time.

Some are hollow, very nicely machined, and look really good. Some are obviously cast, solid, and look very shabby. Both of them seem to work equally well.

The lower portion of a 2 piece FLGR will work quite well by itself, with the conventional plug. One could shorten it to the equivalent of the GI, and it will serve quite well.

At one time I was so desperate to add weight to a pistol, that I actually pounded buckshot in the center of a hollow guide rod. Didn'nt add a whole lot of weight, but it was cheap, and I was all out of depleted uranium.:neener:

I haven't seen a stainless standard recoil spring guide for several years.

They WERE made.
Colt made one for their stainless guns, Colt part number #57272. They even made them for the Officer's Model ACP, and the Commander.
There were at least two others made by "no name" unknown suppliers.

Some were advertised as "stainless steel", but were actually flash chrome plated.

This is something you can do if you have to have "stainless". Simply buy a good guide and have it hard chrome plated.

I was once confronted by an individual that HAD to have a stainless steel, standard length recoil spring guide. Went to my junk-box and found one of the useless full-length kind. Supposedly it was stainless, but out of what alloy I know not... didn't care either.

Measured a standard-length spring guide and then went and got a hacksaw. A few minutes in the lathe and I was done. Worked fine, and solid too.

Somehow I have survived all of these years without having all the innards made out of stainless. Nothing rusted neither... :scrutiny: :neener:
