"Stainless" vs "Carbon" steel

I don't know about considering tool steels carbon steels. Their chemical makeup is closer to stainless than to the typical carbon steels.

I see where you're coming from. However, these high speed tool steels certainly aren't corrosion resistant, and they're certainly high in carbon. Perhaps we should classify them as stainless and non-stainless super alloys. 1055 is no more comparable to M4 than 420J2 is comparable M390.
