Am I a rare person, who likes the utility of stainless, but likes the way it looks in walnut?

IMO this special run should be the standard model. They can keep the blue one. This package seems like a great choice for the field, to me.

I like stainless, although most of the time I can't afford it. Throw in a nice walnut stock and I'll have my heart set on that gun til I get it.

Another nice combination I saw at the gun shop yesterday. It was a lever action rifle, maybe a 20-22 inch barrel. I didn't look at it closely, for the fear of the iwannabuyagun bug would bite again.

Stainless steel with a grey/blackish laminated wood stock...hawt;)

I always liked the look of stainless steel and walnut. A few years ago I bought a Remington Model 7 in stainless for my wet weather deer rifle, but I just had to go out and buy a walnut stock for it, it's fast becoming my favorite rifle for the feel and look of it.

I'm with you. I hate the look of synthetic stocks and I always hate trying to keep the rust off a blued gun.

I prefer synthetic while hunting. I have a wooden stock Rem 700 that is got some scratches in it, just enough to bother me. All of my hunting rifles that I abuse frequently from now on will be synthetic.

I don't really know how I feel about it. I think it looks good on some guns, while on others it looks lousy. I've got a stainless Encore and really wish I could get a walnut stock for it. But I've tried to see what it would look like with the stainless and walnut and I think it looks horrible. I like a custom stainless barrel in a blued action though!

But I'll tell you what really turns my crank. A gloss blued rifle in a blonde maple stock with a gloss finish. A nice curly maple and a gloss blued rifle is absolutely gorgeous! Or maybe I just have a thing for blondes...

I think weatherby has a Vanguard Sporter with a walnut stock and stainless barrel. That's a pretty sharp lookin gun. Little pricey though (it's a weatherby afterall). I think it MSRP's at like, $900. Think I saw one on Buds not long ago for like, $700

"Here's another option: Weatherby Vanguard Stainless Sporter. They're not expensive; bang_bang, you can afford one!"

I'm not a big fan of the Vanguards. Plus, my Stevens 200 is really all I need after I painted it. My all-weather, all-use rifle for under $400 with scope, bipods, and 2 cans of Krylon.:neener:

My Savage 116SE is a stainless/walnut configuration. I like the looks and utility of the combination. I don't know which I like least in terms of the aesthetics, synthetic or laminated-but I will concede that either material is superior to walnut in terms of stability and durability.

I have the Vanguard Sporter in blue already. I got a floor model that someone had apparently dragged along another rifle, so there was a scratch in the stock finish (nothing more than one might get in the field, anyway). Cost me $389 NIB.

Great rifle!

But if I were to pay full price, I'd probably spring for the stainless...

Too bad they don't make it in 7x57 (7-08 doesn't do it for me).

I'm not a big fan of the Vanguards.
Please elaborate. Not looking for an argument (I don't own one, it's no skin off my nose), just interested.

That particular ruger is also available in the 6.5x55 Swede that so many of us are enamored with. Considering they are only making 250 of these, I would be hard pressed not to snatch one up if I came across one. Thank God for layaway programs, its a thing of beauty too my eyes!

Seems like I've read the 7x57 has much better POTENTIAL performance than the 7-08. The 3 Remingtons I owned , and loved, also had fairly short "freebore" in the chamber throat area. They shot well with 140-145 gr. slugs, however, the factory chamber cut didn't allow for a good load for any heavier slugs or longer 150 gr Barnes X or similar types. My understanding is the typical factory rifle chambered in 7X57 will have a generous throat to allow chambering of longer, heavier slugs. When I reluctantly parted with the Remingtons, the plan was to get the Euro 7mm, since most of my shooting/ hunting is with handloads anyway.

While I am a huge lover of Stainless/walnut combination rifles, something doesn't look right about this particular gun. To me, a Manlinchler style rifle (a real classic) should be blue steel. I'm sorry, that's just how I feel.

As most people know, 7x57 factory ammo is deliberately loaded down to safeguard against use in ancient ex-military rifles. Handloaded to the same pressures as the 7-08 (which is fine in a strong, modern rifle), the 7x57 will - slightly - beat the 7-08: not a surprise, since the case capacity is greater. But that slight edge doesn't really matter to the game being targeted.

One real plus is that the 7x57's case allows the use of longer bullets. Of course, the downside is that the 7-08 can be built on short actions, which the 7x57 is generally too long for (some manufacturers' short actions are long enough; most are not). And it could be argued that if you really need the bigger bullet, you're better off with a .30-06 or equivalent.

Practically speaking, the 7x57 and 7-08 are essentially equal. The only real difference is that the 7x57 is a 'classic' cartridge, whereas the 7-08 is a relative newbie without much history (to the best of my knowledge, neither W.D.M. Bell nor anyone else has ever used it on elephant!). I just like the 7x57. See Jack O'Connor's article, "Forty Years with the Little 7mm", and perhaps you will be hooked too! :)

To me, a Manlinchler style rifle (a real classic) should be blue steel. I'm sorry, that's just how I feel.
No need to apologize ... we are all entitled to our own opinions / tastes.

IMO, a true Mannlicher-style rifle should have a butterknife bolt handle, a rotary magazine, and double-set triggers. And of course it should be chambered in 6.5x54. But that's just me. ;)
