I recently bought 1K CCI small pistol primers. I load 9mm, 38spl, 45acp and 44mag calibers. So I bought the primers for the 9mm and 38spl loads. Problem is that the primers were magnum primers. Can I use these primers in my standard loads w/o problems?

For the most part, no problems using the magnum primers with the cartridges listed.

If your existing loads are near maximum, I would work up the loads again with the magnum primers.

It has been my observation that the magnum primer will require about 0.2gn less powder for the same velocity, depending on caliber and powder. Start low and work back up.

I have noticed that with some powders (PB in particular) that, at the lower charge levels, you will get more consistent and much higher velocity with the magnum primer. Where I noticed this was with small primer 45acp.

Yep, I've run out of standard primers a few times and have substituted with magnums, no problem, and I didn't even work them up again.

Now going the other way, in other words, standard substituted for magnums can cause some problems though. When using ball powders such as H110, standard primers don't do so well. The first, and last time I tried that, I found a whole bunch of half burned powder blown all over the bench, and very erratic velocities.

You should work up the load again if you change any one component, but it's about accuracy more than anything else. Magnums primers are about the powder used anyway,
