While out picking up another shotgun, I noticed a Small (like Kahr K40 sized) .40sw made by Star. I didn't really look at it too much but it looked like a single stack you could carry cocked and locked. Anyone know anything about these? Good quality or junk?

You must have found a Firestar

I picked up one of those back in about '95 when the Firestar in .40 first came out ... A little rough on the fit/finish (mostly the checkering) but really kind of a nifty little piece in its own way (the brushed stainless looking "Starvel" finish was pretty good-looking). Mine was (traded it a couple years ago) actually fairly accurate and absolutely reliable with any ammo, including the usual variety of JHPs. I had two problems with the gun: (1) it was doggone heavy for its size and (2) the safety was not as positive (always felt a little too loose) as I would have liked; tried carrying C & L, but found that routine contact would brush the safety off. Bottom line, though, is (IMO) it was definitely a quality firearm, and certainly not junk.

Sounds like a Firestar to me also. They came in 9mm, .40S&W and .45ACP. They came in blued or Starvel (nickel) finishes. All steel, SA only single stack guns. They come packed with features that you would expect to find on more expensive guns. They have beveled mag wells, full legth internal guide rails, front and back checkering, checkered rubber grips, checkered and squared trigger gaurd, dovetailed front and rear three dot sights, oversized and checkered controls, ambi safety, extrended tand to lessen hammer bite, beefy all steel ejector, swithable mag release and a belled bbl for better lockup. They are well designed guns that are now out of production.

I have a M-43 which is the 9mm version. It has been 100% with all ammo and I have shot 1.5" groups with it in Bullseye matches at 25 yards. It is one of my most accurate semi-autos even though it is very small. It is harder to shoot well because you have to concentrate but they have more accuracy then you would imagine. They are very heavy and being SA only, I don't like them for CCW but they are great guns. I got mine for about $250 and think it is one of the best buys I have made. You can find them for very low prices and they are worth picking up if you can deal with the extra weight of the all steel construction and SA trigger. I have retired mine in favor of a Kahr K-9. The Kahr is all steel also but is several ozs lighter and has a DAO trigger with no external safeties. It costs more than twice as much but I feel it too is worth every penny.

The Astra A-100 in .40 is Excellent

I realize I am not really answering your question, but I chime in anyway. Speaking of Spanish .40 calibre pistols, the Astra A-100 was produced in 9MM, .40, and .45, and in matte and polished blue, stainless, and nickel finishes. (Yes, they actually made some stainless guns--I have one.) All weigh about 35 ounces empty and are clones of the Sig 228. But they have higher mag capacity and a slimmer grip. The double action trigger is only average, but the single action trigger is very good. They all have three dot sights and the nickel ones may have a red dot on the front sight. The .40 version has strong appeal because the Mec Gar mag holds 13 rounds, the mags are readily available, and the gun is heavy and strong enough to handle this lively round. These Astras are often for sale on the Net and sometimes you see them at gun shows and in gun shops.

Yes Star and Astra had many better than decent guns. I'll never understand how they went belly up while Llama survives.

I've the A-100 in 45ACP Starvel, not a fav because I don't really like DA/SA guns
but the grip feels really good to me. Astra's have a reputation of the sights shooting loose. I had to add a drop of loc-tite to the rear sight on mine after the initial shooting session, the front sight fell off off my friend's 9mm.

It's been too long since I've shot it, thanks for reminding me!
