One of the problems with the Star PD .45. which is similar to the 1911 in design, is that it uses plastic recoil shock buffers. These buffers are hard to find and expensive. And they wear out quickly. The inexpensive Wilson buffers for the 1911 are similar, but not exactly the same. Would it be possible to replace the original PD recoil spring guide rod with one from a compact 1911 and thus be able to use the Wilson buffers without any modification? The original rod is about 3 and 1/8th inches long.

Thanks,

Star Guide Rod

Howdy DJ,

I'm not as familiar with the Star PD as I should be, but what you're suggesting might be possible if a standard guide rod was modified
slightly.

It's been a long time since I've seen the recoil system on a Star. Is the head about the same size and shape as a standard 1911 design? I know that the Star's spring was captive. Is the spring plug pretty much the same as a 1911's plug in the way it's retained in the slide? If it is, the swap would probably be fairly simple to do by modifying a standard rod head and shortening the length.

Jim Keenan was a more generalized smith than I was. I didn't stray far from 1911s, Smith & Wesson Revolvers, Garand/M-14, and bolt-action rifles. He may be able to better describe the Star's recoil system. Maybe we can all play PM tag and figure a way to do this project.

If the Star's guide rod won't lend itself to modification, the next route to take would be to just have a machinist make one that isn't captive and would accept the standard buffs for the 1911. I have the lathe if I can get
some workable dimensions or a look at a Star guide rod.

Might be a neat project...
