Starting new with IMR 4227 & 44 Magnum

My question is what is your recommended loads for a 240 grain LSWC? I see 22 grains compressed over at Hodgdon's site. I will give that a go. Sounds like a pretty good round in the 1300 fps range.

Is it okay to load down IMR 4227?

I am shooting this out of my Ruger SBH 5.5" Stainless Revolver.

I prefer H110 or 2400, but 4227 will work in the 44 mag. I have in the past used around 20 gr of 4227 IRCC with 240 gr LSWC. It has been a long time ago though and I`m stating this from memory not my notes.
If you want reduced loads ~10 gr of Unique with the 240 gr LSWC is a nice mild accurate load in my pistols.

One of the best loads I have found for 240 gr. LSWC's is 10.0 grains of W231. It is fairly maderate on recoil and very accurate. Here is a 24 shot group at 15 yards.

The pressures that 4227 works best with usually result in compressed loads. I personally don't like compressed loads - I'm too paranoid about the consistency. I'm pretty happy with 2400.

I checked my notes with Dupont 4227 and 429421 in a 6 1/2" 29. I was getting 1290 with 22grs. My 22grs. 2400 load was a tad faster at 1320.

I'd start down and come up on your load like you are talking about.

It may sound strange , but the recoil sensation and muzzle blast seemed noticeably less with the 4227 than the 2400. See what you think in a side by side comparsion. All in all, it was a nice accurate loading.

I have since kept with the 2400 because I was able to find it more readily at better prices.

You can download 4227 a little bit, but not a lot or you will start getting unburned powder and erratic performance. H-110/W296 is even less forgiving for downloaded. Hodgdon actually cautions about it.

2400 is much more forgiving from what everyone here posts about it. If you want to download a lot, Unique and other midrange powders will work great.

I settled on & my Redhawk settled on 20 grs. under a Lyman 429421 1180fps , good accurate load ifin I do my part !!!

I was just worried because of the one listing @ Hodgdon for 22C only.
I see that the Hornady book lists 20.4 - 23.7 for a 240 grain XTP. Thinking inside the box I was wanting to back off the 22 grain load Hodgdon lists for 240 LSWC. So 5-10% off 22 grains is where I was going to start.

I will let you know about the recoil difference. I am just not getting accuracy with 2400 and the LSWC I have on hand. I have a Unique load that shows promise. I like it alot, but wanted a few more fps for hunting. I could not get any AA#9 from my area at the moment, but IMR 4227 is everywhere. I will shoot this weekend, and fill everybody in. Thanks.

Unless you're shooting deer at 150yds, you don't really need more velocity than the 10.0gr Unique load with cast bullets. Cast bullets don't benefit from going much over 1200fps anyway and the deer don't get any deader. No need to beat yourself up to flatten Bambi.

IMR Handloaders Guide

I got to digging around and found one of my IMR handloaders guide data booklets from the 80s I believe.

Page 56 has the .44 handgun data and shows 24.0 grs IMR 4227 doing 1420 at 35,200 CUP with a 240 LGC bullet. All of the other IMR powder loadings for that bullet show CUP readings in excess of 39,000 CUP.


Their standard data disclaimer mentions starting 10% lower and working up with an eye on pressure signs.

I have only tried AA #9 in 9mm from Accurates booklet. Way too hot on pressure signs in my 'test' 92 Beretta. If you have some load suggestions with it for .44, let's hear a few. I have a pound to shoot up.

I've shot a lot of the RCBS 250 KT bullet over 22.0 grains of IMR-4227 with outstanding accuracy and no pressure signs in an old S&W M29 that I once owned. I could routinely hit clay pigeons on the 100-yard berm with that combo!

The standard precautions apply; this was safe in MY gun, etc.

Well. I finally got to shoot the 22.0 grain of IMR 4227, win brass, mcb 240 lswc, and win primer.

I shot a 5 shot group offhand while shooting a buddies new 450 Marlin (what a nice rifle).. Well we had a pickle bucket with a sticky target on the bottom. I put 3 of 5 shots at 20 yards offhand in the same hole, and the other two of the five were about 1/2 away. I am going to confirm this load via chrony and bench shooting, but I think I have found my load for my .44 Magnum SBH.

The recoil was slow, and the gun was a hoot to shoot. If this accuracy continues with this load. I will be jumping with joy. I don't see why it wouldn't. I was on my game today. We had a 1951 Win '64 30-30, my 336 30-30 with Skinner Sights, the Ruger SBH .44 Mag, a Berretta 92f, my Marilin XL-7 .25-06, and an OTB Marlin 450. We had a blast. Literally!

Thanks for the help guys with the .44 Mag. Let's hope the testing is over. I almost forgot. This loading was shot with the Hogue grips on the SBH. I am sure this helped alot. The gun just pointed much easier for me, and it also was more controllable.
