Startled the Pink and Purple Petunias out of me!

Had a moment like that Sunday. I dropped my mag full of defense rounds and put in the FMJ magazine. I set my targets up and got ready to empty a mag or two plinking at cans before I ran my drills. That breaks the monotony and puts a smile on my face. I started doing this because it was fun, anyway. So I unholstered, racked the slide, on target...wait, what was that? Yep, I forgot to empty the one in the chamber. I wasn't expecting to see it go flying when I racked it. No big deal, but my carelessness startled me since I just knew the chamber was empty. I observed all four rules, but I was just positive about the condition.

Reminded me that the rules are there for reason.

I had an instructor tell us something to the effect that "most accidental shooting are with unloaded guns."

I always double-check after pulling a gun, carefully, out of the safe.

By reading all the posts...I guess I'm not the only one!! I'm just glad that I actually checked!! What upsets me most..is that I did NOT put the firearm in to a safe condition before I cased it and put it away! SHAME ON ME!! I'm going to put me in "Time-out!"

Every self defense firearm in my house is loaded (that's most of them). It is not that I treat them as loaded, they are ALL loaded, round in the chamber. The semi autos are all decockers, the revolvers do not not have an empty chamber under the hammer, don't need to with built in modern safeties. Every room has a loaded available firearm, out of sight (you would have to know were it is). Overkill? You get your home invaded, while your home, just once. You will think it's not enough.

Jonmerritt +1 – Been there done that – The only room in my house that doesn’t have a loaded firearm is the spare bedroom. I also look at it from the stand point that if I’m not home, a burglar will never find more than 1 or 2 of them, if he’s lucky.
