Just thought I'd say happy New year to everyone.

Started my new year out right by forgetting to renew my tags in December and had to catch up.

Found out they were expired when the wife got pulled over; it's easy to forget when the things expire during the holidays when we also have three birthdays in the family all within a few days of each other She didn't get a ticket because the officer was understanding.

Anyway, the way this all relates to guns is I left my Sigma locked in the glove box when I went inside the tag office. During the whole procedure I had to stretch a little to reach something and my service dog chose just that moment to move. I use a harness that goes over my shoulder to free my right hand when she's with me, and moving made my shirt ride up and the harness pushed it farther until it exposed my holster.

Some moron then almost yelled to the cop standing inside that I was carrying a gun. The guy who just about freaked out was in his early twenties, and the little old lady standing at the clerk's window next to me told him to calm down that it was a just and empty holster and there was no gun.

The sherrif's deputy asked me why I was carrying an empty holster and I said because it was illegal to carry my weapon into the building so I locked it in the glove box, and it was just a pain in the butt to remove my holster from my belt before I got out of the car, so I left it in place. He had thought maybe it was some kind of empty holster protest, and said he understood perfectly once I explained.

The deputy did ask to see my permit, and I was happy to obliged, but he was more upset at the kid who yelled because that startled a bunch of folks. He told the kid to settle down and complete his business and not make such a fuss.

Happy New Year everyone.

I think I might have become distraught and hysterical if I had seen that, too, although I don't think I would have yelled for a cop. I mean, think about it - the sight of an obviously disarmed man, required by law to be defenseless...it's enough to give one nightmares.

Wait a minute - the deputy asked to see your concealed carry permit - when you weren't carrying??? And it was clear that you weren't carrying??? As far as I know, you don't have to be licensed to wear a holster. And you explicitly don't have to have a CCW license in FL to keep your gun in your glovebox - which is where it was.

It was probably easier to ask to see the lic to carry than prone him out at gun point and ck for a weapon and take the lic to carry. What law says the gun has to be the holster, could have been in the waistband. To take some ones word that there is no gun is a dead mans mistake,

Also, by making a show of asking for my permit he eased the mind and calmed the nerves of the idiot who started the whole thing by freaking out. It was an expedient thing to do, and it worked. As soon as I showed him my permit the show was over and the citizens went back to their lives.

Oh yeah, carrying or not, Florida Statute 790 says you have to show your permit to any officer who asks to see it. It doesn't have any stipulation about only if you are armed.

Same law says you have to declare your weapon and show your permit if you have direct dealing with an officer. I've never bothered to do so if I'm just in the same room such as buying something in a convenience store or coffee shop, but I did have a very observant deputy who had stopped for coffee at Starbuck's notice that not all of the print on my Hawaiian shirt was planned by the clothing manufacturer a couple of months ago. He asked what I was carrying and I told him a Sigma. He shuddered and said I should get a Glock, but he never asked for my permit.
