States With Highest CCW Percentage

I'm sure cost hampers AR. I believe it is around $250 , forget renewal costs.

One of the reasons some folks forgo the AR Res and get a Non- Res FL. Not sure how that would change the % for AR or any other states.

Maybe hillbilly will chime in on current fees. I did some "horse trading" for mine.

hillbilly - lastest word on ASPs "position" on the Non-Res FL?

[ boy- that was a fiasco]

It seems to me that a fair number of Virginians have taken advantage of VA 'shall issue' CWPs. Its pretty rational, it just requires a clean back ground check, proof of taking a recignized firearms safety course (NRA, military, LE, etc), $50 fee, and forty-five days later you can get your VA CWP thru the Clerk of the County Court, it's good for five years.

Still, I'd be surprised if we had 2% of the population licensed. Va's overall experience with 'shall issue' CWPs has been positive, iespecially if you compare crime rates of VA, DC, and MD. It became law in 1995.

Just renewed my ccw in Michigan. 5 years at $125.00. I think it was $75.00 plus classes three years ago when we went Shall Issue. Now all you have to do is attest to the fact that you have range time and know the law and cough up the money, you get 5 years.
I had a general unrestricted ccw for about 10 years prior to the law change in Michigan. More rights, less money. The new Michigan Shall Issue law restricts gun rights in the very places where trouble might break out in these times of the terrorist insurection around the world. Most of the gun carry laws are stupid by todays standards. If you're not mentally ill or a felon, who should give a rat's behind where you pack concealed. In fact, I feel much more secure knowing that just about anyone I see, anywhere, might just be packin.

Could the crime rate have some effect on whether folks get CCW? Maybe Texas has a lower CCW percentage than Pennsylvania because Penn has (perhaps) a higher crime rate and people are more concerned about crime.

Or, maybe the urban centers in Texas and elsewhere make it harder to get a permit, thus limiting the numbers. Maybe urbanites in some states are just more likely to carry, thus adding to the percentage.

Am I still coherent? Me need sleep.

"I can sure believe that PA is one of the top CCW states. With the exception of the areas around Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, we are heavily armed."

Absolutely. I'm actually surprised we scored that low! :D

I think, perhaps, the hoops one has to jump through may have something to do with the number of permits in a given state. Here in PA, it's very easy and inexpensive. The charge is something like $19 and it's good for 5 years in PA. Permit is ready to pick up within 2 weeks. We can also carry just about everywhere, even airports (so long as you don't walk down a terminal). Lock boxes are available at most court houses. You can actually carry in the building, just not in the actual court room.

Personally

We shouldn't have gun control, or the need for "permission slips" - Period!

I have a RIGHT . Don't matter if in my home state or some other state.

I do not want a Nat'l Carry "permisson slip" , hell I'm pissed enough with having to obtain one on a State level.

I concur with the idea of cost prohibitive in some folks minds for what they actually get in return. Too much hassle because of some restrictons , and actually providing a lock box for CCW's....not here, we do have a Submarine and White Trash trailer though. AR is "stoopid" in NOT taking a better look at FL and other state's set up.

(I discounted NY for the time being because I believe they counted the number of pistol permits, not the number of pistol carry permits)
A pistol permit is a pistol carry permit. A few counties restrict the carry to hunting or target shooting [meaning you can carry concealed only while traveling to and from the range or hunting site]. And NYC may have some additional restrictions.

But for the vast majority of the state, the permit required to possess a handgun is also an unrestricted carry permit.

New Mexico has some strange requirements, which is one of the reasons that we will never get reciprocity with anyone. Maybe we get rid of the 25 yr min age next year.

So long as you are outside the Peoples Republic of Bernallio and the PR of Santa Fe, no one seems to care if you carry or not. Never seen anyone arrested for concealed carry alone, always accompanied by a real crime. Never seen concealed carry prosecuted subsequent to a legal shooting either, outside of Santa Fe and Bernalillo counties.

Concealed carry is allowed without permit in vehicle, that includes tractors, motorcycles and bicycles too. Funny you can pedal your @$$ off concealed without a permit but not walk?

I think the 6.76% in PA that carry outnumber our entire population.
A quick recalculation shows that we are at .082%
Sam

I had had in mind approx 6% for PA but yeah - it is now above 6.7%. I am proud to be one of those and am glad so many take this up.

Needless to say - and an example for some other places ... the streets do NOT flow with blood because of this armed section of the populace. Quite the contrary.

I fully endorse the need for a national CCW ... but will not hold my breath.

"Wow. Ohio is already ahead of Colorado AND New Mexico! That's quite a holeshot you guys got off of the line!!"

Thanks--it was a long time coming.

Here's what I get for CA
Total population .127%
Based upon over age 25 (couldn't find 21 or even 18)
.204%

Data from DOJ 45120 2003 permits
CA Finance dept census #'s ~35.5 million total population, ~22 above 25

Pretty dismal, are we the lowest of states that issue any kind of permit?

I urged my daughter and son-in-law in TX to get their permits, and to be grateful that in their state it was possible, but they never bothered. Now they are moving here to the police state of Illinois and might end up living in a suburb where even ownership of a handgun is illegal!

Heh, PA is great. Still, I'd like to see us hit 10% at a minimum. I'm encouraging everyone I know to get one. "It's $25 for 5 years. Better safe than sorry. What if you need it someday down the road?" etc

Interesting - Nevada has such a low %. Then again, the part I live in is populated by a whole bunch of diesel pickups, most of which have scoped deer/antelope/elk rifles clearly visible in the back window. It's also pretty well known around here that if you mess with the family, friends or property you might just end up on the business side of one of those rifles. My kinda folk! Besides, I'd guess that a good % carry anyway with or withot the "permission" of some government bureaucrat. Las Vegas is on a different planet.
