With all of the 10/22 iterations I always wondered why Ruger didn't go with a brass-and-wood variety. I'd love the look of dark wood with brass accents.
They could go with a 'traditional' feel with a brass butt plate, collar, mag' release, maybe trigger and front sight.
They could even go with a steampunk scheme with a brass scope base and brass flash hider in addition to the other bits, maybe even a brass rail under the forearm for a bipod.
Anybody else think that would be a good look for the 50th anniversary?

Heh - I would buy one, but only with an International stock with a cheekroll and a elaborate brass trigger guard. :)

gunstores would have to stock goggles and leather caps

I'm not a big fan of brass. Its (I think) more expensive than steel, so why use it?

And owen, I think taliv had something along these lines in mind when he wrote "googles" ;)

A brass 10/22 you say? Check this out: http://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=483339&highlight=brass

Skip to page 59 of the thread if you just want to see the finished rifle. If you've got some time read through the whole thread and be thoroughly impressed. I've got to say though, it's quite a spoiler to skip to the end. Following the build was a real treat and made finally seeing the finished product was a great end to a great thread/story excellently told and documented by the OP.

Cliff notes:
Home machined brass receiver
Many home machined brass parts/accents
Home made beautiful stock

TBR's work is amazing and I think it would probably even be cool enough for me to buy one but I understand why Ruger would never build them like that.

Brass looks strange on more modern arms, it's rather flashy and looks like something from Franklin Mint rather than a piece for serious use.
Ah, but it doesn't oxidize like steel and it takes a patina quite nicely.

I kinda dig the steam punk thing. Ive seen some tricked out steam punk nerf guns, and would love something in a rim fire. Something like a Marlin 60, or anything with a more 'vintage' tubular magazine might fit the theme better.

Check out Ruger website. Right now asking for 10-22 ideas. Top 10 to be voted on by fans and top one produced.

TBR's brass 10/22 is an amazing build that despite all efforts became a monster. For those without the inclination to read those 60 pages, TBR started his quest with the purchase of a used .22 short barrel and finished by ultimately replacing that barrel for weight savings. In the end, a rifle that looked great was continuously plagued by weight issues and was in danger of becoming an 8 lb. close range squirrel gun.

Sure brass can look nice and has some well suited attributes for use in rifles but if steam punk is what you want, I'd say a Damascus 10/22 with fiddleback maple stock, octagonal barrel sporting a tang peep sight and scroll trigger guard would be my choice. Perhaps a drum magazine to put it over the top.

When I think steam punk rifle, I think of the scoped lever gun used by Doc Brown in Back to the Future III. A 10/22 done up like that might look cool.

LOL I had forgotten about that gun.
The rifle pictured above doesn't really strike me as Steam Punk. It needs a brass tube scope and possibly some gears and cogs and valves and gauges to really for the theme.

Quite a cool idea, actually.

However, Steampunk is a rather narrow customer base and one of the things many people in the genre value isn't so much commercially available "steampunk" products as the ability to create this themselves.

To that end, you might try your own hand at such a task.

For example, you might consider a Cerakote job on the gun barrel and receiver which simulates the appearance of brass.

The optics could also be steampunked easily using brass paints and model buildup. You could even make your own "optics" of a sort using free-mounted lenses.

Cusom woodworking on a new stock, addition of tubing, fancy glass spheres, dishes, and pressure gauges to give it that retro-futuristic look.

Google "steampunk guns" or "steampunk rifles" to get some ideas, then start in on your own project.

You can easily get a 10/22 (or other .22 rifle) used at a decent price and make it your fantasy project.

With anodizing and graphic paint applications, nearly any color or simulated material is possible. I'd be happy with a Bentz chamber, receiver tang, pillar model to give every buyer an improved base to work with.

I'm thinking at least a clock built into the stock, brass sling swivels, leather sling with big buckle, maybe build in a bayonet stud with a WWI sword bayonet.
This may be turning into a project after all.
