So, I reload my own 9mm major bullets. This time around I was not paying attention and used SR MAGNUM primers resulting in lots of light strikes due to a harder primer cup cup. Had to pull out the match since I was wasting so many rounds. Has a disaster like this ever happened to any of you?

Yes in that I pulled out of a match because of ammo problems. Didn’t crimp quite tight enough and bullets were backing out.

But my question is why shoot major in Steel Challenge?

If you were using New Manufactured CCI450's I feel your pain. The new 450's nothing will light them off. Bolt gun, Tc Encore, Tc contender, Ruger Blackhawk or GP100. Something definitely wrong with those primers.

The old one's before 2019 work, there is something a miss.

I had 17 out of 50 fail to fire in anything including a Ruger Ranch rifle in 300 Blackout.

CCI 450's are 0.025" cup thickness
("magnum small rifle")

CCI 400's are 0.020" cup thickness
("standard small rifle")

You never want to use a 0.025" primer for handgun.
Cup is too thick

Some handguns will reliably fire a 0.020" primer cup. But you can expect most striker-fired handguns to fail with even 0.020" cups.

Small pistol primers tend to be about 0.018" cup thickness

Not ammo related but did have a equipment issue 2 years ago that cost me a match. just started using a Kanic with a vortex holo sight. at the state steel challenge match got 1 shot off, and the dot disappeared. thinking it was a dead battery I went to the safe area and put a new on in ( I just bought this pack of batteries that week) tried 3 different batteries still would not work. Thought must be a bad dot so Monday I called Vortex, the person I talked to siad test the battery. guess what the entire pack of batteries was totally dead.

Don't bother with pistols that can't light off No41 primers.

Those are bad/dud primers, I got a brick of 450s like that too.

I had this happen with my Thunderbirds thermostat. 3 in a row from two stores were defective. Thought maybe a head gasket, but too much coincidence. Put old one back in and fine. Never bought another Stant.

I know they have the different Steel Challenge equipment divisions. Are you required to shoot major in the USPSA open SC division?

There is no minimum power factor requirement for Steel Challenge and of course no benefit to shooting at major power factor levels. Also remember this is stationary steel so no worries about knocking it over.

You asked so I'm answering, not meant to be a prick.

No. I don't reload, only shoot production ammo.

Mainly shoot IDPA although I've really wanted to try some SC.

Going to try to use the rest of those CCI 450's in small rifle match 308 Winchester from Starline Brass. If My Rifle will not set them off nothing will.
