I have been asked to be a gunner for a setter hunt test. The birds will be chuckar. Steel shot is mandatory.

I have a Remington 870 Express with a modified barrel, a Benneli Nova with interchangeable chokes and a Winchester Upland special O/U with interchangeable chokes. All are 12 Ga.

What would be the best steel shot load for this situation?

Thanks,
DM

I recommend #4-6 shot as steel loses velocity faster than lead. You generally need to choose shot 2 sizes larger than you would for lead. Steel does, however, start out faster than usual lead loads and you wil lead the birds slightly less.

As for chokes, steel will pattern "full" when using modified choke and "modified" when using Imp.Cylinder.
