LIke many, I have always been attracted to the WWII British Sten for its utter simplicity and historical significance. Since a real one or a reproduction would be far out of my price range, not to mention illegal most places, what about a Sten-like carbine?

The great thing about the Sten layout is that it avoids just about every specific feature (pistol grip, folding stock, flash hider (few had them), etc.) that offends in the various asssault weapons bans. With 10-round mags, it should even be legal in California, Massachusetts, New York, etc.

In the USA it would need to have a 16" barrel and fire from a closed bolt with a proper firing pin mechanism, but a simple blowback action shouldn't be that expensive to manufacture. With modern metal construction (say aluminum stock, receiver and shroud) it ought to be pretty light and handy.

Sound like something that would interest anyone else?

the fact that it would need a trigger group is contrary to the stens purpose (sears much easier to produce then trigger groups)

how ever, there are alot of people who are building thier own. sten parts kits are about 100$ and the build is some what easy. im sorry i dont have specifics on HOW to do it.

but heres one of the cheaper places to get a parts kit
http://www.gunthings.com/ (left hand side, click Submachine guns , then about 1/2 way down the page.)

Shotgun news had an article on how to build one a few months back. You can probable google and come with some builder sites as well?

Hell, even with big mags they're legal in NY. Nobody's made STEN magazines since the fifties, so they're all preban. Mwuahahahahah.
