im looking to staRt on a stengun project and I was wondering if it was possible to build one from scratch and change the magwell over to use a glock magazine, as far as legalality goes I contacted the local atf office about a build from scratch, he said it was legal as long as I don't make them for other people

It's possible to build ANYTHING you want from scratch, if you have the capabilities and equipment. You think the first ones grew on trees?

I've built a lot of Stens, still got a shelf full of kits from back when they were 3/$100. If you were desperate enough you could probably adapt a Glock mag to a Sten by cutting the grip off a Glock, removing the magwell from a Sten, and attaching the Glock grip to the Sten tube with a couple of brackets. You may have to modify the pick-up ridges on the bolt to accommodate the Glock mag, been a while since I messed with one and don't remember exactly what they looked like and how wide they were.

You could always make a new sheet metal Glock magwell to replace the Sten magwell. It's just attached with a couple of spot welds.

If you make the bottom of the bolt the same shape as a Glock slide and keep the Glock angle, it should work.

I was wanting to do it so I could use a drum, but it sounds like it could be to much work for my skill level right now

The current version of the Micro Uzi used by Israeli SOF uses the Glock mags. The grip angle was altered a bit in the process.

Has to be semi-auto only, of course, fire from a closed bolt and either be a handgun or have a barrel 16" or over. Other than that, no problem in making one up. But the Glock (and other pistol magazines) are angled, where the STEN magazine is straight and the original mag housing is made to accommodate that type magazine.

alright. another question, what should I use to weld that kit up, I think im going with Indianapolis ordnance as a source for thetube, and semi auto kit

TIG is the easiest and most controllable, but I've seen MIG, oxy-acetylene, and brazed.

I use my wire-feed welder for all my builds,takes some practice but works good.

I've found it to be one of the simpler things that I've done lately. The fact that I own a machine shop may possibly have influenced my opinion of the difficulty ....

my plan is to use a semi auto conversion made by Indianapolis ordanance so won't have to fabricate much outside of the receiver, its my next step in building a gun, already got an ar 15 and muzzleloader under my belt

ok, on the bottom bolt guide is a "hammer" that uses an original sear to trip it

Sounds like a neat system. Never seen one like that, I like that better than the modified fire control parts. Good luck with it, they're fun guns to shoot.
