I see several posts talking about improving the 200 with replacement stocks...I have looked at Boyds, Stocky stocks and the magazine well in the stock seems to be the holdback....is there any stocks out there for a 200 that holds the mag well when you take it apart? mine is dog ugly in 7mm-08 but shoots dime groups...may pull out the cammo paint if I cant find a stock. I do love my 200.

I had a 200 in .308Win. Loved the rifle, hated the lightweight composite crap stock it came with. Kicked like a friggin mule with that stock. I put a Boyd's on it. Increased the weight considerable (for a range rifle I think that's good), was much more comfortable and looked a million times better. It fit perfectly without any adjustments. Here's a photo of it.

the mag well remains in the stock

the magwell is the stock. the magazine is just a folded up piece of steel with a spring in the middle. it's probably press fit to ensure it stays alinged properly. if it is stuck in the stock, a firm tug should break it loose.

The magazine in my older style Savage attatches to the action and comes off with a whack from a mallet. The newer Savage/Stevens mags are now attatched to the stocks. If this rifle is the new model like I think it is the replacement stock needs to have the magazine mounts.

You might check with the fellas on the Savage forum.

Sharp Shooters Supply on the sponsers page of that link will sell stocks for both versions, good guy to deal with too.

Isn't one of the differences between the new and old style is that one is a staggered magazine and the other is a straight feed magazine?

Yes.

Also the action screw spacing was lengthened to 4.40" make room for those new mags. I think that all the center-feed models get the 4.40" stock but I'm not sure.

It makes buying stocks a bit tricky so make sure to measure the holes between the action screws before ordering and tell them if it's the old stagger feed or center feed magazine model.

thanks Bigfoot, love my ugly 200 7-08, just want a better looking stock, 200s are a tackdriving bargain. just knocked out a #300 boar out with mine last nite,.,

I put a bell and carlson carbylite (sp?) on mine. works great. My rem 700 wishes it was as nice. I will work on that one over the summer. But you're right the original stocks on the stevens 200's are horrid. I may build a custom job on another 200 if I get a chance and some extra cash.
