I'd eventually like to pick one of these up next time they're on sale. When was the most recent sale on the 200 series? I know Academy Sports (and maybe Dicks and BP as well) had offered them for under $200 at certain times of the year (I have read it was $179). Curious if they'll be doing this again. I think I'd be better suited to buy a used 10 or 110 for $250 to $300 vs. paying a non sale price on a 200 but I'd like to hold off on a used purchase if the sale may happen again.

How interchangable are other parts like barrels, trigger assy's, and stocks ?
They are the same as the Savage 10/110 line just not as well finished. I have a Model 11 barrel on my Stevens 200 and bolt built from model 10 parts.

That's good to know, I'll take function over form anyday especially if I can save some money doing it.

As far as stocks go,there is a difference between center feed and stagger feed stocks(different action screw spacing),magazines as well. This is NOT a differnce between Savage and Stevens but a difference between models in each brand.

The easiest way to tell is to measure the screw hole spacing. For the Model 10/200 short action, the stagger feed measures 4 9/32" center-center hole spacing and the center feed measures 4 7/16" center to center. If you take the action out of the stock, the magazine box will stay in the stock of the center feed while the magazine box will stay on the action of the stagger feed. Here is some good info from Boyd's.http://www.boydsgunstocks.com/content/Boyds/CustomPages/FAQ_actionlengthguide.htm

If you like the accutrigger you're better off getting the savage. If you are going to replace the trigger, you're better off getting the stevens because it's cheaper. The stocks aren't good on either except the models which have the accustock (which is decent but not as good as most aftermarket options). Those are more expensive though. Personally I am using the action from a Stevens 200 to build one rifle right now. It's actually cheaper to buy the whole stevens rifle and take the parts off it than it is to buy just the action on it's own.

A quick note on changing stocks. If you are going from synthetic to wood, you will need to get new action screws. The wood stocks require longer action screws.

I too was at one time thinking of getting a Stevens 200 plus new wood stock and possibly a Timney trigger. I'm no longer going down that path, but I did some serious looking.

However, most places seemed to be offering the Stevens 200 at $350, on sale for $319.99 just before deer season. Similarly the Savage Edge/Axis was being sold for $299, going to $279.99 just before deer hunting on the same sales.

That seems to be the same prices the Savage Edge is going for, and I'd expect to see a lot of places in 'deer season' prices now. I'd be surprised as heck to see an ad for the Stevens 200 at $179, and If I saw that price I'd probably buy THREE.

I think you need to ad another $100 to your price expectations. If I am wrong, like I said, tell me as soon as you see these below $200 ones, I am dead serious about buying multiple at that price.

I have found that often people who talk guns and gun prices can get quite hazy about exactly how long ago they saw that price. It may well have been seen when cans of pop (or cans of soda for you lot that get all confused by the term pop) were 50 cents.

I have found that Grice always has very good prices right in line or often a tad below Brass Pro and Academy.

That ad makes me think my price memory is pretty good. I do notice a Stevens 22LR rifle that is being listed for the prices you mentioned. Maybe whoever was mentioning that 'below $200' Stevens 200 price was accidentally thinking of the 22LR pricing.

No I am talking Stevens 200. And man did this thread get derailed! lol...

Good info here but way off of the title and original post.

Anyways, to answer your question akodo, yes I mean the actual Stevens 200 (as in CF rifle). Google Stevens 200 $179 and you'll see plenty of talk about the sales. The last one I see in google results is 2011 I believe but I wanted to see if anyone else had seen this sale recently.

About the Stevens 200 being discontinued, I don't know but it's still on the Savage website.

I apologize for my part in derailing the thread. I am seriously interested in purchasing the Stevens 200 in 223/556. I'm also looking at it for possible future builds. As a mechanic I find it irritating to look up firearm "specs" and find nothing but sales descriptions.

No harm done 7.62... lol:D I was just saying... Still never did get my question answered but that's no big deal at least we had a good discussion about these rifles. At $179, I'd have a hard time not buying one for everyone I know if I could afford to. What a great price.

A guy locally had a used 200 in 7mm-08 for $275 but I couldn't justify spending that much when I see used Model 10, 11, 110, and 111 models for $75 more once in a while. I almost landed an older 300WM model 111 in lefty for $250... just missed it. I was pretty bummed out. My wife said no anyways (tight month). Oh the pain of when you can't jump on a deal.

I paid $310 in 2008 for my Model 200 SA SF in .223 rem. The only Model 10/11/12s I've seen here (and there have been darn few) are $400-500 and sometimes higher. Long actions are in the $300-400 range. I have yet to see a used model 200 LA or SA for sale and I belong to over 40 gun trading groups.

777,

I did google like you said. It seems like this offer was only for guns in 270 and 7mm-08, and seems to be from some Texas stores only. In fact one comment mentioned that people showing up at other Academy stores were being turned away.

One person mentioned that a store employee thought they were selling at that price because they had bought a bunch and they just weren't selling.

I also see this "

"John,

I called the Academy in San Angelo on Monday morning and the guy in the gun department said that $179.99 was the REAL price (by the way, that price was in a real label form on the end of the box); marked down from a Sunday ad that had them priced at $249.99. I had him put two of them on hold for me and I jumped in the truck and took a trip to Angelo. Got one .270 and one 7mm-08! "

That almost sounds like there was a mistake with the pricing somewhere along the line. Generally boxes don't show up with the sale price already listed on them.

All this is adding up to me that yes, you were right, Academy was selling the Stevens 200 in a pair of good chamberings for $179.99 which is one heck of a price.

But it is also telling me that it wasn't nation-wide, and was related to either a mistake or an excessive inventory situation...i.e. not a situation that is likely to be repeated.

I've seen probably 20 threads on this (arf.com, different places that turned up after a search). And it wasn't caliber limited from what I've read. I've also read that Bass Pro had them at $199 around the same time as Academy and Dicks matched the $179.

We'll see if it happens again. That's a better deal than the old Mosin Nagants used to be at $59 a piece considering what you're getting dollar for dollar. Of course you could get surplus ammo for the mosins. But the Stevens would make a much better hunting rifle in my opinion. If you sporterized a $59 mosin (back when they could be had for that price), you'd be in around the same price range as the Stevens.

I think Savage has discontinued the Stevens line.......

I think you got your best answer in the 1st reply. They still show them on their website, but I cannot recall the last time I saw one anywhere, at any price. I think the $179 Stevens rifles are as likely to return as the 10 cent Cokes I used to buy.

Savage is pushing the Axis as their budget rifle right now. I cannot see the 200 as ever being a major player in the future.
