Saw a Stevens 311 12 gauge in the local shop yesterday. At first glance, I noticed the metal was kind of worn, but the stock looked almost brand new. Then I saw that it had a plastic wood-grained stock. It really looked like wood with a high gloss finish, not too bad looking (as some of these old plastic stocks can be). The asking price was $189.

My question: Anybody have any experience trying to fit one of these with wood replacement stocks? Although the gun looked nice, I can't get past the "feel" of the glossy plastic, but would consider buying it if replacement wood was available, and everything else about it checked out ok.

No experience myself.

Sorry I don't have link to Boyds Gunstocks, I bet they have one.

Do a search under Okiecruffler - he is at the top of our list for 311 "gurus"...he kinda likes these...just a wee bit. :)

They have the stock. It is not expensive, and the fitting on a 311 is really not difficult. A 12 gauge 311 usually goes for $250 +/-. You will have easily $100 in a replacement stock, not counting labor, once you buy stock, finishing supplies, recoil pad, etc. Just see if you can get the shop to discount the gun based on that knowledge. It is also likely that you can sell an uncracked plastic (Tenite?) stock for a 311 on Ebay and recover part of your investment.

Tenite is right, never understood why they put those plastic stocks on a classic SxS.

Although the 311's were notoriously weak in the wrist. Anybody want to sell me one in 20ga? :)

AHH, So good to be back in the saddle

I've got 2 with the tenite stocks, they hang on the wall wishing they could go out to play like their siblings. A SXS just isn't right without some nice wood. Boyd's is your best bet, and fitting is a piece of cake, but from time to time I see some stocks on Ebay and they tend to go dirt cheap. That's a pretty fair price on it if everything else is suitable.
