:)Greetings, I have a Stevens 58 D shotgun in 20 gauge, currently it's a wallhanger :cuss:due to some sort of problem with a very weak firing pin strike. I am thinking the firing pin protrusion is not enough. I have some ideas as to how to fix it, but I want to get some input from the membership here due to the great level of expertise that is in this forum. It seems that the whole cocking piece / firing pin assembly, including the spring, is a sealed unit, which strikes me as quite odd. How am I supposed to field strip it to get a new spring in there? Everything else about it seems just fine, It's not worn out at all. The thing is it does not shoot lol therefore it's a wall hanger. :banghead:it feeds and ejects shells well enough. Best regards, Tony.

Remove the bolt and inspect it for a screw or pin and it will be self explaning at that point and welcome to THR :)

Have you removed the 'Bolt Head Retaining Pin' that holds the 2 pieces of the bolt together - the Bolt Head inside the Bolt Cap? The crosspin should be near the front of the bolt. The Bolt Head is the inside piece that has slots for the spring, striker & firing pin.

I'm looking at a drawing in a '67 Shooter's Bible, so you could have a different version of the Model 58. This one is labeled Stevens Model 58 and Springfield Model 18.

edited to add: I can't remember if the crosspin is in or under the bolt handle, or just near it. Nuts.

Hello thanks for the replies, I must have a newer version of the Stevens 58 d, there is no take down screw ON THE COCKING PIECE OF THE BOLT that I could see. . . :banghead: I have taken the bolt apart into 3 pieces, other than that it does not break down any further.

Thanks Chawbaccer, I think the problem might be with the sear binding in the slot for it in the receiver. I filed the slot out wider. I will try it with some primed hulls.
