My nephew inherited a Stevens Model 87B from his father (my bro-in-law) and is wondering about value. It's in only fair condition and needs some work; he's guessing a new firing pin and a thorough cleaning. The wood is good, no gouges, but needs refinish and the bluing is poor. I think it's worth under $100. If it's completely restored you'd still have gun that really only has sentimental value. It's not a highly valued collectible. I'd like to hear your opinions please.

I think you are right.
I have old guns that belonged to my dad, and some aren't worth much money, but they are priceless to me.

The 87b is an interesting and unique old rifle because of the way it and other "click clacks" or "gill guns" work but it doesn't have much monetary value.. I'd say it would probably worth about $150 if it worked and was in very good overall condition. You're right though, in the condition you describe and not working, it's worth less than $100. I've bought several that didn't work for $50 or less and repaired them... The most common problems are the springs for the bolt and firing pin as well as issues with the feed throat... Some parts were available from Numrichs and Jack First 3 or 4 years ago but I'm not sure of the current parts supply..... The springs are likely still available though...
