Well, Ive been looking for one of these for some time now, and finally found one worth getting on gunbroker. It was designed in the 70's to replace the P38s and Hi Powers of the Austrian Armed Forces. It entered production in 1981 and ended in 1988 with only about 15,000 or so being made. Steyr entered the pistol in the competitions for both Austrian and US military contracts but lost both due to the high production costs. Glock won the Austrian one, and Beretta won the US one. So Steyr tried selling it in the civilian market but again the high cost of production kept the sales down. It eventually lost enough money that they shut down the program. By all accounts, it is supposedly one of the most accurate handguns in the world and has one of the highest mag capacities of any handgun(18 rounds in the mag). I have not yet shot it, but will do so on Saturday! I will post a range report as well. Here are some pics:

I wanted one when they came out, but I was a teenager and didn't have the cash or the ability to buy a gun.

I still want one, but still really can't afford it now that they are collector's items.

The magazines are worth their weight in gold going for as much a $220 each. It is an incredible gun. I've had two of them and will never sell the one that I have. You have polygonal rifling (no lead through the gun) and a fixed barrel offering outstanding accuracy, a gas break system that takes recoil and muzzle flip way down for very fast follow-up shots and very pleasant shooting, and 18+1 capacity. The quality of the trigger will vary depending on where your gun was in the overall production. Yours is the civilian version that made up a large majority of the 15,000 to 20,000 guns produced. The military model differs in the finish which is a gray/green phosphate.

Enjoy.

I saw one at a shop today for $600. It only had one mag, or I would have been tempted.

I know the mags on these are worth their weight in gold, so thats why I bought this one as soon as I saw it on gunbroker. Bought it for $600, and that was for the gun, original box, manual with test target, 4 mags, two holsters, a mag carrier, and some 9x19 RCBS dies. Heck of a deal if you ask me. I think there is easily a grand worth of stuff here, if not more. There are deals out there, you just gotta look for em. Took me a while to find this one. I will head to the range Sat afternoon and see how she performs. Will post back with a report.

Assuming the gun is as good as it looks in the photo you probably got all of that for half of the market value. Nice haul.

years ago, just after steyr lost the bid for the US contract, our gunstore had one marked down to something like $289 IIRC,i begged my freind to get it instead of some other toy she thought she wanted ( didn't keep it for 6 months). i always thought it was a cool piece, now i wish i'd have grabbed that deal.

Ok guys, I got a chance to take her out today and run about 100rds through her. What a great shooter! I think it even beat out my CZ75 by a slim margin, and that CZ is the most accurate gun Ive ever shot to date. Only had problems with one of my mags. Seems it didnt lock up quite right and caused a few jams. It would also just pop loose during firing. But the other mags worked great. Anyways, here are a few targets. The first two are from the Steyr. 10rd groups from 15 yards. Both are 1 1/2 inch groups. The third target is of my CZ75, 10 rds from 15 yards. The CZ shot a 2 inch group. Both of these guns shoot way better than I do, and I cant wait to get my LASIK done over the holidays so I can tighten up these groups a bit!
