I just picked up another M-95 carbine at a pawn shop this past weekend while in Myrtle Beach. It has a broken stock and a severely pitted barrel, So, for $35.00 out the door, the only hard part was convincing my wife why I needed such a beat up gun. I'm going to make this into a single shot sporter, in either 30-40 Krag or perhaps in 280 Ross rimless....(live ejection would be outta the question:D )
The rim diameter is fairly close on 30-40, within a few thousansths. I have no problem threading a barrel blank and reaming a chamber, but what about a stock? Does ANYONE make an aftermarket wood stock for these things? Or do I have a lot of inletting ahead of me?

On the stock, I have no ideas. I have one in pretty decent shape and I like shooting it. I think it is extremely interesting. I think it was about three years ago Bob White at the Accuracy Corner had one listed. It had a cut down military stock and had a new Douglas barrel chambered for 7.62 x 54R. I have bought a couple of rifles off Bob and he is great to deal with. Unfortunately, I called a few days late and it had been sold. I do recall the price was $179.00 Essex

Numrich has them along with lots of other replacement parts for these

www.e-gunparts.com

They also have a nice schematic of the reciever parts

I have one of these that I picked up last year for $150 and it came with $250 rounds of original Nazi marked ammo on stripper clips and in original boxes. I save the stripper clips since finding loose ammo seems to be easier and cheaper. I love the ping as you chamber the last round and the clip pops out the bottom, reminds me of a Garand:D

My stock broke at the grip so I glued it back together and works fine now, its a fun gun I really like mine. Good luck with your project!

.280 Ross? At $10-12 a round, and no way it will fit into the magazine?

I bought an M95 carbine last year and it's a hoot to shoot. With the new Hornady 205 gr sp ammo, I think it might make a pretty good brush rifle for whitetails, except the trigger is pretty bad. Here's a pic with my CZ carbine.

Very true. I had originall planned on a single shot, however, after doing some research, it appears the conversion to 7.62x54R is rather easy. That will probably be the route I go. I don't plan on shooting it too much, I'll primarily use it for hunting. I have a few loose rounds of the .280, the idea just seemed cool for a moment. The other caliber that interests me is .405 Winchester. The rim dia is only .010" under, and OAL of the loaded cartridge is .180" longer. Hmmmm......

Alright! M95s. My Steyr M95 was my first firearm purchase. It's by far my favorite bolt action rifle. Also, for those who haven't looked, the stripper clips have markings on the back of them as well (some Nazi marked, some Austrian marked, some have other stuff that I don't know what it means). I never really payed attention to the stripper clips, 'cause I always thought the Nazi eagle on the ammo was so neat. Talk about a trip back in time when you shoot it! Straight bolts are just plain cool. They're like an in-between bolt action and semi-auto (basically, it's a semi-auto sans gas blowback).

.30-40 and 7.62x54R have both been done, and work well by all accounts. Strangely, seems like most examples I've heard of were found up in Alaska.
