Steyr M-series guide rod

Would it be possible to make a steel guide rod for the Steyr M-series. Would it be safe and at least as functional as the original? Got the idea after ordering a steel guide rod for my CZ97B.

Personally I think the original plastic guide rod is hideous especially since its squared off on the front end.
