Steyr M9

I'm not going to have as much money to spare as I thought, so a Walther p99 is out until late summer. I have settled for getting a Steyr M9, if you call that settling. Does anyone know where 14 round mags can be purchased? I plan on buying a few before I buy the gun.

go to www.glocktalk.com and look in the Steyr Forums. Last I hear mags are scarce and you have to look for people selling.

Some owners have problems; some don't. Those that have problems report the same ones: failures to extract and failures to go into battery. The Steyrs have been discussed extensively at the Firing Line.

I've had two. My advice: Use the money for the P99. CDNN has some new P99's for under $500 in its catalog.

The P99s are nice guns. I checked them out and seriously considered getting one a couple of years ago. I bought an M40 instead and have been extremely satisfied with it. I've put about 1300-1400 rounds through it with no problems. Although I still like the P99s, and prefer the adjustable backstrap and grip feel to the Steyr, I'd skip the Walther and buy two M9s with the $500. I did read about a few extractor problems that were fixed by reinstalling the extractor plunger a different way, but I don't think it was very common. The only way I could see the Steyr not going into battery is with some out-of-spec ammo. I've seen reports of people getting a lot of brass on top of the head while shooting, but it's not something I've experienced with the M40. Play with both of them and get the one you like the most - if you find you don't like the M9, it won't do you any good to buy two of them for the price of the P99. I replaced the extractor on one of mine. It did not solve the problem.

On my last trip to the range with it, the slide locked three times (the failure to go into battery problem). To unlock the slide, I had to field strip the gun (live round in the chamber) and tap the barrel with a rubber mallet to free from the slide.

Nothing like this has ever happened with my P99QA or my SW99 .45ACP.

I have a limited number (200-300 is my best guess) through my Steyr M9 and it's been great. I have a P99 QPQ that I've only shot 50 rounds since I purchased it. It was reliable and accurate, but for some reason it just doesn't "grab" me. I traded to get a SW99 compact not too long ago (I didn't really want the gun as much as I wanted to get rid of the gun I traded ). This one doesn't do much for me either. My father actually managed to get 50 rounds through his P99 QA before it broke. I don't know what happened and luckily he was dry firing the gun when it broke, since it locked up tight and we couldn't field strip it. S&W repaired it and returned it under warranty within 2 weeks without comment as to what went wrong.
