The P99s are nice guns. I checked them out and seriously considered getting one a couple of years ago. I bought an M40 instead and have been extremely satisfied with it. I've put about 1300-1400 rounds through it with no problems. Although I still like the P99s, and prefer the adjustable backstrap and grip feel to the Steyr, I'd skip the Walther and buy two M9s with the $500. I did read about a few extractor problems that were fixed by reinstalling the extractor plunger a different way, but I don't think it was very common. The only way I could see the Steyr not going into battery is with some out-of-spec ammo. I've seen reports of people getting a lot of brass on top of the head while shooting, but it's not something I've experienced with the M40. Play with both of them and get the one you like the most - if you find you don't like the M9, it won't do you any good to buy two of them for the price of the P99.
